Genres Melt Away In Nuclear Fire

GIN
5 March 2012
  • Excerpt: Nuclear Dawn huh? Let me guess. Another game following in the Fallout fad of post apocalyptic worlds that have been plaguing the game market. Okay then, Nuclear Dawn, here is your chance to prove me wrong about the genre. Fast Forward to Sometime Later "Alright already you win!" So as it turns out, not all games that jump on bandwagons are bad followers. Nuclear Dawn is quickly becoming notable as one of these that break the trend.

  • Conclusion: A surprisingly deep and well-designed FPS/RTS hybrid. A Team Fortress 2 alternative that needs a community to thrive.

Nuclear Dawn

Game Boyz

  • Excerpt: Nuclear Dawn should have a big sign on the store page. This sign, should it exist, should read “GET A HEADSET.” I'm deadly serious here, because voice comms and group tactics are extremely important in Nuclear Dawn, and a headset, trust me, makes your job a lot easier. Soldiers can warn the commander of flanking manoeuvres, commanders can let people know what they're building, and without a headset, it's like watching a bunch of headless chickens...

Expert Review

GameSpot
13 October 2011
  • Summary: Nuclear Dawn is finally here, and it's good. That comes as welcome news to shooter fans who have been waiting for the game to emerge in a final, commercial form since it initially arrived way back in 2006 as a Source mod. Those with patience have now been rewarded with an innovative and exciting hybrid game that welds real-time strategy and first-person shooting together into a (mostly) cohesive whole.
  • Pros: Innovative design blending FPS action with hands-on RTS mechanics, Solid balance with classes and weaponry, Good variety of maps with interesting, intricate cityscape designs, Smart map design leads to intense battles for key resources
  • Cons: No solo play, bot support, or even playable tutorials, Can be quite chaotic unless you're in a match with experienced players, EMP grenades can be exploited

Nuclear Dawn

  • Excerpt: There’s nothing more frustrating while playing an online First Person Shooter (FPS) than a team that just isn’t communicating with each other. A team with no microphones and a gung-ho attitude is just asking to be wiped out by a team that understands the importance of strategy. What if you could make the tactical objectives part of the game too?

Nuclear Dawn Review

AusGamers
30 September 2011
  • Conclusion: The pace and tone of the game is more akin to Team Fortress 2 than Call of Duty, which isn’t necessarily a problem, but it’ll strike you by just how quiet it is. It’s also quite a nice-looking game, although the Source Engine is starting to show its age. There’s enough colour in all of the environments to keep things interesting, despite the bleak setting. This is by no means a complicated game, but it’s certainly fun.
