Excerpt: They may guarantee advance bookings, but developing sequels to cult games can be quite a thankless task. Three years ago, the folks at BioWare sent the gaming community (particularly classic RPG lovers) into raptures with the staggeringly successful Neverwinter Nights . Obviously, a sequel was necessary. And as BioWare was too busy to handle it this time around, it fell to Obsidian to develop the game.
Excerpt: First Impressions My reaction is There are few people I know who haven’t played or at least heard of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). A franchise that has spawned hoards of games and even movies, it has one of the most powerful followings around. One of the many games based on the D&D rules was Neverwinter Nights, originally released in 2002. The game brought many of the original D&D aspects to life, and certainly did the franchise proud.
Excerpt: Ever since Diablo II got over-corrupted with farmers and hacks I've been looking for a new dungeon crawler that doesn't suck and has some decent online playability. Neverwinter Nights 2 is one of the better experiences I've had. While it may not perfect, it does give dungeon masters everywhere somewhere else to go besides the basement.
Conclusion: I still wonder whether BioWare would have done a better job at this or not. Then again, probably not seeing they have other titles on their mind. After all Obsidian Entertainment did continue accordingly the Neverwinter legacy. It's only fair to appreciate their efforts to come up with such an elaborated story and dozens of captivating side quests.
Conclusion: With all this on offer, Neverwinter Nights 2 will surely keep RPG fans busy for a long time. You won't regret buying the game, especially if you've played through the original as well as the expansion packs. On the other hand, Obsidian obviously hasn't made any real breakthroughs, which is a bummer, really, seeing as the original brought quite a lot of fresh ideas to the RPG scene.
Pros: Enough RPG goodness to keep you occupied for days, excellent audio;
Cons: Nothing innovative in terms of gameplay (that we haven't seen from Obsidian before), technical setbacks, quirks in the AI, certain segments of the game seem visually outdated.
