Excerpt: Need for Speed: Carbon is the latest installment in the Need for Speed series. Despite it using the same engine like the previous game, Need for Speed: Carbon has a very different look from Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which took place in a nicely varied city.
Conclusion: The goal here is to explore as much of the massive city as possible, all the while racing people for money and other goodies. In Carbon, you'll also be competing with rival road crews for control of territory - a mechanic very similar to how handled its turf wars.
Conclusion: EA tries to do a lot with NFS: Carbon, but that still doesn't help me shake the feeling that the accelerated pace of NFS releases is in many ways pointless and counter-productive. It dilutes the overall impression of the franchise, rather than make it more appealing to the fans.
Pros: Still a good arcade racer that offers plenty of exciting moments, cop chases right after a race;
Cons: Wingmen control a little clunky and ineffective, monotonous backdrops, very little true innovation and what's there is not implemented well enough, underwhelming soundtrack.
Conclusion: The game does press forward, and should please fans of the series, but while it is a fun racing game, the enjoyable predecessor is now available for cheaper, and may be worth picking up instead.
Conclusion: But this is the NFS franchise, and in my opinion it'll only return to its glory days when the physics engine is made more realistic and when the millions of dollars spent on hiring models and actors to appear in worthless productions to further the story are cut from the game.
Excerpt: Another Christmas, and yet another NFS game rolls onto the shelves. But can it possibly still have all of the rapid goodness that you remember from the old days? In short, yes. But, when it comes to the question of is it any different, you might find EA um-ing and ah-ing.
Excerpt: Call them money making goblins or call them an evil corporation hell bent on overtaking the entire world, one thing’s for sure, EA sure know how to make racing games. Their Need for Speed series has dominated the racing genre for years with the occasional exception of a Burnout or a Midnight Club.
