Conclusion: Overall Mutant Mudds is a bit of a victim of its own dedication. It does everything it can to not only allude to games of decades past, but to become one of them. It ignores many of the advances games have made over the last 30 or so years. While many will enjoy its pure-platforming action and retro visual/aural design, others, like myself will grow tired of repeating segments that weren’t overly memorable the first five or six times.
Pros: Visuals, music, and gameplay are all dedicated to their visual roots, controls are tight and responsive.
Cons: Repetitive gameplay, plane-hopping mechanic is less impressive on 2D displays.
Conclusion: At the end of the day, Mutant Mudds is a great tribute to the platformers many of us grew up with. The art style is well done and the difficulty is spot on – it literally feels like it could have been made 20 years ago. The only problem is that games have changed a great deal since then and Mutant Mudds is left feeling stale and boring.
Conclusion: Mutant Mudds had a bit of a problematic development, first appearing at the 2009 E3 under the name Maximilian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds as a third person shooter. Unfortunately when the title did not garner enough publisher attention the game was scrapped. The game resurfaced in late 2010 when it tried to find 1,000 fans in order to justify its release on the Nintendo DSi.
Summary: Renegade Kid does not give up easily. The developer's latest title, Mutant Mudds , had a long, rough journey, first as a polygonal third-person shooter for the DS that never found a publisher and then as a DSiWare hopeful that likewise never garnered enough support. Only when Renegade Kid returned to the drawing board and remade Mutant Mudds as a basic 2D platformer for the eShop did the game get greenlit. When I say "basic," I mean basic . It is not innovative at all.
Excerpt: This is a retro-inspired game with a punishing difficulty that does everything right to bring to mind the tougher games of yesteryear. It will take clever platforming and mastering everything to beat the game’s 60 levels. If that’s something you’ve been looking for, you need to pick up Mutant Mudds .
