Too much simulation, too little interaction

J. Loscheider "No one knows I'm a radical", Amazon
4 June 2008
  • Summary: The so-called 4X games may not be my forté, but I can't see how MOO3 really fits into the category of "game". You need a great deal of patience and a desire to drop interactivity in exchange for thoroughness of simulation. Oh, you can do everything in this game. You can terraform. You can conduct diplomacy, invade other planets, build ships and raise armies, conduct research, bomb another people into molecular components. But somehow, none of that is fun here.

A somewhat positive review!!!

Craig B. "Craig B.", Amazon

  • Summary: Everything bad that you've heard about this game is true. But, after playing it for a while, it got rather addicting. When I first started playing it I couldn't stand it. But, out of shear boredom, I kept at it. After some time I couldn't pull myself away from it. Now, it's still not as good as MOO2. I still find MANY faults in the game, but for some reason I can't stop playing it. There is a certain feeling of being disconnected from what is going on.

Requires extraordinary patience to learn, but...

Elizabeth R. Powell, Amazon
4 April 2004
  • Summary: ...it's actually not too bad. but let's get the bad out of the way first: the battle graphics are pathetic. the world map graphics, though, are very pretty and stylish, as are the animated races which are all artistically done. the problem lies in tedium. answering all your diplomacy messages in a large game is mind-numbingly mundane, since you'll almost always accept proposals presented by other races. Also a big turn-off is the lack of automatic upgrades to your ships.

Trying to be fair on all aspecs of this title....

Adam J. Ruggieri "Xen Xander", Amazon
28 January 2004
  • Summary: Allow me to try and write a review based upon countless hours of play and analyzing the layout and structure. First, this is a 4x, DEEP strategy title. When first starting the game, leaving the help hints on and seriously reading them can help you better understand the workings. The manual; I use only to look up a reference if something is confusing me (a.k.a. what Casus Belle was). If you try to understand the game by reading it cover to cover you won't succeed.

Not a sequal to Orion II

J. Loscheider "No one knows I'm a radical", Amazon
15 October 2003
  • Summary: I think the biggest mistake by the producers was to market this game as a sequal to MOII. It simply isn't and doesn't feel like one. Rather this feel like the first in a second series of more sophisticated space empire games. The main problem with the game itself is that it seems very much to be a working model released as a final product. I think they have the basic framework for a good game here, but most aspects seem poorly developed.

A Real Thinker...

Joshua B. Fassett, Amazon
3 July 2003
  • Summary: While this game does not offer any actual eye candy whatsoever, it does offer a bit more for the intellectually inclined. Granted, the A.I. can often be quirky and illogical (declaring war, sending word of improved relations, congradulating you for something that you don't know, etc. without any reason). But I do find that the game seems to have an addictive effect.

Great Potential, Many Problems

JED, Amazon
24 June 2003
  • Summary: First, I've owned and played MOO1 and MOO2. A lot. They were great, and I still play MOO2 occasionally. MOO3 appears to be a natural evolution of the game, and it has great potential. But... There are plenty of bugs in the game and a pot full of inconsistencies. The first patch is out, but it does not make any claim to fix all the bugs and/or correct the many flaws in the game. My advice: wait for version 1.5, hopefully by the end of the year (my guess, not theirs).

Ein Klassiker neu aufgelegt

masauer, Ciao
31 December 2003
  • Summary: „Der Weltall, die unendlichen Weiten....“.
