The Lord of the Rings Online

Strategy Informer

  • Conclusion: There’s plenty of room for Turbine to add new content and goodies for the LOTRO community, though they need to concentrate on more immediate matters of ironing out some rough edges, which are few and far between luckily. Armed with their deed system, player music for laughs and getting to know one another, and a solid environment to weave your Middle-Earth destinies – Lord of the Rings Online is a great game, I’ve had and intend to keep having fun every step of the way.

  • Excerpt: I played LOTRO at launch and for a few months after. I was… underwhelmed. Perhaps it was unfair to judge such a massive game on its early state. Since last week, the game has gone free to play. So this seemed like a perfect opportunity to check it out again.

Is It Better Than World of Warcraft?

RPGamer
15 April 2010
  • Excerpt: Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar , or LOTRO for short, is the first massively multiplayer online RPG set in the Lord of the Rings universe. As such, it has a high level to rise to, if it wishes to keep both MMO players and fans of the series interested in it. Furthermore, does it stand against the giants in the market?

The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar

The Gamers Temple

  • Excerpt: It really is about time that Tolkien's seminal classic work The Lord of the Rings got the MMORPG treatment. After all, it was The Lord of the Rings that served as inspiration for Dungeons & Dragons, the paper RPG that influences the design of PC RPGs to this day. So in a way we've finally come full circle. Closing that circle is by no means an easy job, as undoubtedly expectations are high whenever Tolkien's works are involved.

  • Excerpt: If you're going up against World of Warcraft , you better have an ace up your sleeve. And what better trump card than the father of modern fantasy, J.R.R. Tolkien? The developers at Turbine have plenty of experience making MMOs, and this time, they've got the definitive license to back their efforts. While Lord of the Rings Online may not be a WoW -killer, it's the closest anyone has come.

  • Excerpt: Graphics & Sound: Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar could have been a spectacular disaster on the scale of Star Wars Galaxies . Creating a meaningful play experience in an already well-defined universe is difficult enough for a single-player game, so in a massively-multiplayer one, it reaches near nightmare levels. Given the success of World of Warcraft and The Lord of the Rings , Turbine could have just produced a Middle-earth flavored clone.

The bandits responsible can be seen fleeing into the distance, terrified by my three feet and eight inches of wrath."
