Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Review (PC)

Softpedia
7 May 2012
  • Conclusion: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a great action RPG. It's not perfect, at least for now, due to things like annoying mini-games, problematic camera, or the silent protagonist, but it's still a stunning experience that will delight you for tens if not hundreds of hours. After a realistic experience like Skyrim, Reckoning is the perfect alternative, offering a fun-filled experience with a dynamic combat system and a freedom that you won't soon forget.
  • Pros: +Dynamic combat, +Lots of choices and freedom, +Stylized visuals
  • Cons: -Annoying mini-games, -Problematic camera

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (PC)

  • Excerpt: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is one of those games, that when reviewed at this late in the game, is somewhat of a tragedy.  38 Studios, the current owner and creator of the property, has since gone bankrupt, and been liquidated.  So while later reviews might often not be so bad since it can direct people towards a game they may have forgotten about, in this case, only the publishers (and presumably, the players) can benefit.
  • Pros: Very large world, with over 200 quests, and many, many hours of content; interesting factions, with a fairly well realized world back story; excellent combat, spell, and enemy animations; good voice acting; enjoyable music; very nice graphics and art style; really well polished with relatively few bugs considering the vastness of the game
  • Cons: A somewhat generic fantasy world; some voice actors are reused often; some characters are forgettable; many quests are standard RPG fare; rarely do you get the sense that what choices you make really change the world; a few minor interface glitches

Expert Review

Game Over Online
20 February 2012
  • Excerpt: The tale follows your created character who overcomes the notable handicap of being dead. After choosing your sex, appearance, and race (one of four with differing initial stat bonuses), you are unceremoniously dumped into a pit known as the Well of Souls. Of course, with a moniker like that the fact that you climb out of a pile of corpses shouldn't come as much of a surprise. But here's the rub: seeing as how you were dead and all, you no longer have a fate.

  • Excerpt: Single player action meets MMO missions, with surprising results. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (or KAR for the rest of this review) is an interesting proposition, which answers some very fresh questions about RPGs as a genre. What would happen if you added God of War’s combat to a role playing game? How about if you applied MMO levelling and mission structure to a purely single-player experience?
  • Pros: Excellent, intuitive combat, multiple character variations, with simple options to swap for a new build, hundreds of levels, with hours of gameplay, large gameworld with an open approach to levelling, great graphics, with good sound too, hugely immersive world, with plenty to lose yourself in outside of the missions, less generic approach to characters and species
  • Cons: Can get repetitive, raid-style dungeons still lack some depth, cartoony style will put some people off, no 3D options, plays better with a controller, which it feels designed for

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

PC GURU
24 February 2012

  • Conclusion: Libertà!!!

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Gamereactor
7 February 2012
