Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword

  • Conclusion: When I first started playing this expansion pack, I naturally picked the Dutch (being Dutch myself) and I was delighted to hear my units actually 'speaking' Dutch, as I had expected it to be the usual gibberish. I was, however, equally disappointed when I heard the German units speak.

ActionTrip

  • Conclusion: Unfortunately, these fun elements simply don't gel well together, so the end product seems rather flat. That's the best way to describe it really. For a game that tries hard to create a flamboyant image for itself, Just Cause simply lacks the punch and the personality to truly deliver on that front.
  • Pros: Pretty, great terrain rendering, Rico's aerial stunts, huge landscapes, sense of immersion you get from being able to do what you like in the world;
  • Cons: Lacks character, flimsy story, Rico doesn't have the presence and charisma needed, no real incentive to play once the main campaign is done.

  • Excerpt: If you haven't gotten your fill yet of action games that let you overthrow a corrupt Caribbean government, then have I got a game for you. Just Cause is often described as being a mix of Far Cry and Grand Theft Auto , and while that works well enough for the five-second rundown of the game, we need...

Expert Review

GameSpot

  • Summary: Suspension of disbelief is such a fundamental part of the video game experience that we often take it for granted. Multiple lives and first-aid kits that instantly mend whatever ails you are conventions that we accept without batting an eye, even in games that purport to have realistic settings.
  • Pros: Well-realized island setting, parachute and grappling gun lend the action a highly unique flavor, no loading times as you travel across the island, great variety of vehicles to pilot
  • Cons: Short story mode, not enough ancillary activities, gunplay is too easy, implementation of stunts a little clunky at times

  • Excerpt: It’s really hard to review free roaming games without comparing them to the GTA series so I’ll try and keep that to a minimum ( I’ll try!) over here. As you may have read in our preview, Just Cause is a mixture of Far Cry (tropical setting) and GTA (free roaming nature) with some totally over the...

  • Summary: "Genau so wünscht man sich doch moderne Spiele. Eine gute alte Geschichte, objektiv klar liegende Verhältnisse und dazu jede Menge Freiheiten was das eigene Vergnügen angeht. Just Cause macht Spass, einfacher läßt es sich kaum ausdrücken.
