Conclusion: When I first started playing this expansion pack, I naturally picked the Dutch (being Dutch myself) and I was delighted to hear my units actually 'speaking' Dutch, as I had expected it to be the usual gibberish. I was, however, equally disappointed when I heard the German units speak. It was as if a Dutch person had heard the phrase "Ich bin ein Berliner" a few times and thought he could pull off speaking German too.
Conclusion: Unfortunately, these fun elements simply don't gel well together, so the end product seems rather flat. That's the best way to describe it really. For a game that tries hard to create a flamboyant image for itself, Just Cause simply lacks the punch and the personality to truly deliver on that front. On the bright side, Avalanche does show a lot of potential. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes and come back with a stronger contender next time.
Pros: Pretty, great terrain rendering, Rico's aerial stunts, huge landscapes, sense of immersion you get from being able to do what you like in the world;
Cons: Lacks character, flimsy story, Rico doesn't have the presence and charisma needed, no real incentive to play once the main campaign is done.
Excerpt: If you haven't gotten your fill yet of action games that let you overthrow a corrupt Caribbean government, then have I got a game for you. Just Cause is often described as being a mix of Far Cry and Grand Theft Auto , and while that works well enough for the five-second rundown of the game, we need to dive a little deeper to see if that comparison really sticks. Let's get into the PC version of this new action game from Avalanche Studios and Eidos.
Summary: Suspension of disbelief is such a fundamental part of the video game experience that we often take it for granted. Multiple lives and first-aid kits that instantly mend whatever ails you are conventions that we accept without batting an eye, even in games that purport to have realistic settings. That said, Just Cause is a visceral third-person action game with some outrageous action that will require an extra helping of that suspension of disbelief to be able to enjoy.
Pros: Well-realized island setting, parachute and grappling gun lend the action a highly unique flavor, no loading times as you travel across the island, great variety of vehicles to pilot
Cons: Short story mode, not enough ancillary activities, gunplay is too easy, implementation of stunts a little clunky at times
Excerpt: Most people have now heard of Grand Theft Auto 3, Rockstar Games' huge PlayStation 2 hit that has now been ported to the PC. This game has gotten tons of awards on top of being easily the best selling game of 2001 on any game platform. If you haven't had a chance to experience GTA3, and you have the computer hardware powerful enough, then this third-person action game is almost definitely for you.
Conclusion: For PC owners - you've seen this done better before. Xbox 360 owners, take a long hard look at Saints Row first if you're after a combat strong open world game. With either format, Just Cause is by no means a dud, but there's superior options at your disposal. Sadly for Just Cause, it's kind of at the nexus of current and next gen when it comes to their interpretation of 'open world'.
Pros: Huge game world, Difficulty level doesn't throw you in at the deep end
Cons: Not much incentive to explore, Visuals could be even better
