Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

Destructoid
2 September 2013
  • Summary: Ask any old-school PC gamer about his favorite tactical games, and more often than not you'll find a Jagged Alliance title near the top of the list. It's a name held in nearly as high regard as X-COM or Syndicate, and for good reason. Sir-Tech's classic series combined impressive depth with character and personality, cementing its place in the pantheon of all-time PC greats.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

Square-Go
9 April 2012
  • Excerpt: Turn based strategy games require certain degrees of patience, planning and some tactical decisions. This level of unit command and control is what made games like the original XCOM and Jagged Alliance so popular, but Back in Action has changed their mantra. Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is the latest title in much loved classic Jagged Alliance series.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

Auracore MediaWorks
28 March 2012
  • Summary: It's jagged, but nothing lines up.
  • Pros: One of very few recent offerings in the Tactical RPG genre, lots of challenge, long play time
  • Cons: Terrible voice acting, poor game balance, weapon variety is an illusion, terrain is impossible to read, enemies are overpowered too early on, 3D graphics are lost in isometric view, squad management is terrible... I could actually complain about more, but I'm losing my will to live.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

Thunderbolt Games
10 March 2012
  • Excerpt: When it comes to the complex, tactical games of yesteryear, many have either evolved or been remade into simpler versions of themselves. Games such as Rainbow Six and Fallout once demanded greater tactical resolve. Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is the sequel that does not break down in the face of scripted set pieces, but rather holds onto its desire to be a complex, tactical game. The problems that litter the game are miniscule in size, maximum in number.

Game Debate
1 March 2012
  • Excerpt: It’s a surprisingly hard life being a tyrannical despot, you know. Leading a democracy is pretty simple by comparison. In a democracy you’ve always got until the next election to cheer people up, and if you muck it up really badly you’re likely to have a lucrative after-dinner speaking career to fall back on. Tyrants, though? Everyone’s all smiles and “yes, sir”s, until they’re not. Then it’s a MAC-10 to the back of the neck and that’s all she wrote.
  • Pros: Tactics can be fun, Tons of gear, Management adds depth
  • Cons: Clunky, Unfinished, Brain-dead AI

(PC Review) Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

The Entertainment Depot
21 February 2012
  • Summary: Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is a game whose potent post-patch potential buoys its otherwise limp arrival. The framework for an exceptional tactical strategy game is in place, but it’s hampered by so many time-consuming chores and head-scratching implementations that it will be too rough around the edges for many.

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

Gamereactor
16 February 2012
  • Conclusion: I didn't play any of the original Jagged Alliance games, so I came to Back in Action with a completely open mind. Well, that's not entirely true; having seen a trailer and read a bit of spiel, I was really looking forward to playing it. The original PC classics were turn-based strategy games, and over the years they developed a strong cult following. There will be fans of the originals who are deeply suspicious of the shift to real-time, but they needn't worry too much.
  • Pros: Huge range of customisation options; considerable campaign; interesting 'play and go' tactics.
  • Cons: Poor AI; terrible voice acting and scripting; insufficient tutorial; unpredictable enemies.

Test zu Jagged Alliance: Back in Action

IGN
4 October 2014

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action - Crossfire - Test

Eurogamer
25 September 2012

Jagged Alliance: Back in Action - Shades of Red, Patch 1.13 - Test

Eurogamer
21 June 2012
