Summary: Most of the other reviewers have already covered the game play aspects (of which I mostly agree with all that has been said); this Review is from the perspective of someone who had paid full price of the initial (bug-ridden) release of HOI III *years* ago as well as HOI 2 (and Armageddon) as well as HOI 1. (0.7) - steep steep learning curve: lots of nuance and technique that can only be discovered through gameplay (as well as your style of gameplay).
Summary: I purchased this HOI3 Collection in 2012 - gameplay deteriorated so much, too many crashes to desktop wasting hours of gameplay, and For The Motherland (the 3.xx branch) is no longer supported, that I can only recommend acquisition of this product to enable you to play Their Finest Hour (which is far more stable, and a five star review by me).

Summary: I am a returning user. I used to play this game five years ago when it was had only been around a year or two. It used to be horrific. Crashes galore, patches on a weekly basis and the game itself was lame. The AI was a breeze to beat (Paradox used to brag about having a user who conquered the world as Hungary...indicative of how weak the AI was) and the game's mechanics did strange things (see below).
Summary: This is easily one of the most complex Real Time Strategy (RTS) games out there. Historical accuracy is combined with an amazing level of detail; you can control virtually every aspect of your country; politics, education, industry and tech. Combat sequences are more strategic than tactical. I love this kind of thing, but it's definitely not for everyone. If you're looking for explosions and excitement, try something else.
Summary: This is a very friendly WWII strategy game its very grown up and controllable. No little kiddie cartoon characters wandering around etc. I don't do any games requiring Steam for use or activation. I play lots of computer games without Steam and don't need some 3rd party software in my business. I love being able to pause peruse pick and choose all at my leisure from among the tech trees.
Summary: I love playing Axis and Allies and I thought this would be a more challenging extension of that same game type. However, I found this game to be overly complex. It was so complex it was past the point of enjoyable. It seems if you could ever figure the game out that it would play well but I don't think I will play it again.
