  • Excerpt: The makers of Europa Universalis are making a bigger name for themselves on their Hearts of Iron franchise than that earlier Euro-centric title. The reason? My university professor can answer that.

  • Summary: The addition of the extra eight years, new technology and the tweaks to the gameplay are all a welcome addition but the game is still lacking. The game still seems to end very abruptly even with the addition of the extra ten years and the addition of new technology as you are still only just getting...

  • Excerpt: Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday may not be the casual gamer's best intro to the uberhardcore world of wargaming, but it's not half bad, either. If you're a n00b to the strategy wargame, then you might want to cut your teeth somewhere else.
  • Pros: ups: Deep, multi-faceted strategy that Grognards will love ...
  • Cons: downs: ... but strategy newbs won't.

  • Summary: The biggest complaint fans of Hearts of Iron II had was that is just wasn’t quite a long enough game. Sure, it spanned the entirety of WWII with oodles of detail, tons of strategy goodness, and enough technological and diplomatic options to make my head spin, but for many the hard-stop date happened...

Doomsday heats up the Cold War with nukes and spies.

GameSpot
11 April 2006
  • Summary: Even though wondering "What if?" has always been a popular pastime for armchair generals, Paradox Interactive has stayed away from speculation. Franchises such as Europa Universalis and Hearts of Iron feature authenticity so precise that you often feel like you're paging through a textbook.
  • Pros: Longer campaigns allow for more-satisfying conclusions, Great Cold War flavor, with a nuclear race, spies, and military hardware specific to the era, Tremendous amount of content for an expansion pack, especially one retailing for under $20
  • Cons: Plays similarly to the original Hearts of Iron II, but with nukes, Graphics and audio are still extremely mediocre

If not for lingering issues with the steep learning curve, the barrage of information boxes, and a couple of bugs, this would undeniably be Paradox's finest hour.

GameSpot

  • Summary: If there were a hall of fame for great game concepts, Hearts of Iron would be a first-ballot inductee. But moving the strategic themes and historical depth of the Europa Universalis series to World War II was such a surefire idea that developer Paradox Interactive forgot the actual game.
  • Pros: Incredible depth and scope, Tremendous replay value, Much better than its predecessor
  • Cons: Very steep learning curve, Dated presentation, Some noticeable bugs

Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday review

  • Conclusion: Some fans would feel short changed by purchasing this. The inclusion of the original full game to supplement a rather limited amount of additions gives a great value package, but only if you're new to the game. Besides all this,
