Summary: Haunted Manor: Queen of Death was a much better game than I was expecting. There were more HO scenes than I like, but there was interactivity and for the couple of unidentifiable items in each one, I didn’t waste much time on them and used the hint button. There was lots of backtracking, but everything was well laid out, and I never felt the need for a map; it generally wasn’t just A to B to A so didn’t feel like padding.
Summary: I AM EVIL. It's been a long time since a game truly creeped me out and Haunted Manor: Queen of Death delivers. Other reviewers have mentioned the music (Mozart's Requiem, a personal fave) but I have 2 points to add to this: 1_ There are many more movements to Requiem and using all of them would have neatly carried the game's musical score. 2_Nevertheless, The soundtrack and sound effects, especially with headphones on, are down-right diabolical at times.
Summary: In the introduction to the game you see your character, a schoolgirl, watch her mother die and shrivel up. I was immediately put off by this, which wasn't scary so much as sad. But after playing the demo I decided to buy the game anyway. The gameplay was better than the story, a combination of inventory collection and HO scenes with an occasional minigame/puzzle.
Summary: On the whole a very good game. Yes the story has been done in various permutations before but it's a plot I enjoy. Very good graphics and puzzles were sufficiently varied so not a case of "another one of those to do". World is quite large with lots to explore. No map but world is quite logical so I didn't get lost.
Summary: Played the CE demo and waited for what seemed like forever for the SE release which I have now been playing for several long sittings. Normally I get tired of these HO adventures after an hour or so and need a break, but this one flows so well I haven't wanted to quit. Background scenes and music are particularly lovely; some fun in-scene animations to do; hints a bit slow refilling, but items to be found are great assortment of unusual and interesting things.
