Setting

The game is set in a fictional 36 square-kilometer state called San Andreas. This state is based on certain areas of California and Nevada. It is composed of three major cities namely Los Santos (based on Los Angeles), San Fierro (based on San Francisco), and Las Venturas (based on Las Vegas).

Gameplay

In this primarily third-person shooter and driving game, players control an African-American gang member named Carl “CJ” Johnson. Players can move around on foot and they can even swim. They can also steal a wide selection of vehicles from cars to airplanes.

Although players of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas are free to play the game as they please, there is a storyline mission they must go through to progress and unlock cities and certain content. There are also optional side missions which, apart from the optional side missions in the previous Grand Theft Auto games, include robbery, pimping, truck driving, train driving, and many others.

Players can also take part in mini-games such as basketball, pool, rhythm-based challenges, and arcade games.

Other features of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas include gang wars and car modification. In this game, players can also spend on a number of things such as tattoos and food. Players can also use their money to gamble.

Mulitplayer

A second player can join the game. However, the game cannot be played in splitscreen and missions cannot be accomplished in multiplayer mode.
