Setting

Gameplay

Players of Grand Theft Auto III play the character of a nameless criminal who needs to commit various crimes in order to climb up the city’s crime ladder before being able to confront a former girlfriend who betrayed him in a bank heist. Players are free to explore the city as they complete missions and side missions that often involve criminal activities.

Pursuing main missions are required for the player to unlock certain characters, maps, and content. However, the missions can be completed at the player’s own leisure.

In this primarily third-person shooter and driving game, players can travel on foot as well as drive a wide variety of vehicles as well as a watercraft and a fixed-wing aircraft. They can engage in hand-to-hand combat as well as make use of a number of available weapons.
