Conclusion: Another good thing is that Gothic 2 Gold costs a mere 19 bucks and it's worth every cent, especially if you're a persistent RPG freak (like myself). In any case, the game is a definite must-have for RPG fans. It is also a perfect way to kill time before Gothic 3 hits the stores.
Pros: A revised and polished version of an excellent RPG, plenty of new content, a profound RPG experience altogether;
Cons: Certain gameplay drawbacks from the original game are still present, steep learning curve, awkward controls.
Excerpt: Gothic 2 is everything that should be seen in an RPG. It’s that simple. My review could stop right here, and you’d know everything you need to. But then, you wouldn’t be able to know all the great things about it...so I’ll continue.
Conclusion: While embarking on this adventure there will be plenty of opportunities to whack away on various enemies. While it is fun once you get the hang of it, learning to use the controls for combat takes quite a bit of time to get your timing right to really lay into an enemy. For the first little while swinging at enemies will not feel fluid at all as you clumsily take a few swings at your opponent but with time and lots of practice it becomes a lot easier to quickly connect...
Excerpt: I’ve never really been a RPG fan. I think it was the Final Fantasy series that drove me away from the genre with it’s linearity, stats, dodgy camera angles and turn-based combat. However, in recent months the so-called A-RPGs like Fable and Morrowind have caught my attention, promising more exploration and action. Leaning towards adventure rather than points and numbers, they seem to be what RPGs should be all about.
Excerpt: Sometime during the fall of 2001, I gave a fairly unknown game called 'Gothic’ a try. My expectations weren’t high at all, but it was an RPG - so it could be fun. The game turned out to be one of my all-time favorite games, regardless of genre. The graphics weren’t great, the music was okay, the controls were weird at best - but the story was very involving, and kept you going for between 30 and 40 hours (depending on how many quests you did that weren’t related to the...
Conclusion: Still, all the horrible parts aside, if you spend long enough playing it, it can work you into such a frenzy of frustration that you have to keep on playing it. You just have to beat that Orc, or find that lost artefact, and I guess that could appeal to certain gamers, especially hardcore Action RPG players. Overall, I can't say the game is bad, because it isn't.
Pros: Nice Hack 'n' Slash battle system., Good Graphics on high-end systems., Very nice music., Element of complexity not often seen.
Cons: TOOOO HAAARRRDDD., PC Requirements too high for normal people., Low graphics settings means that it looks like the entire land is made of mud., The element of complexity is often TOO complex.
