Football Manger 2008

Continously since 2001, Sports Interactive is creating a new Football Manager every year. The games is published by Sega and was first sold for their console. The PC version is available since October 2007 now.

The gameplay always stays quite the same: the player is the manager of a football team of his choice and is thus responsible for developpment and success of his favourite squad. The possibilities of the manager are as manifold as in real life: the manager has to sell and buy players. He has to take care of their training. He can evolve skills of every single player in multifarious ways. He is responisible for the finances and has to find some ways to generate income. This could be entrance fee for visitors of the matches, advertising on the football shirts or advertising in the sport field, selling of players, selling stuff for fans or finding a sponsor. Of course, the football stadium has to be extended, when the team becomes more successful and attracts more fans and spectators.

He decides and defines the tactic of his team. The player himself can not really play the matches and get involved by them through a joypad, the controlled team is playing automatically, but the he can now, and this is new in the 2008 version, directly change tactic during the game. He has to react swiftly to events and actions taking place in the match. No more relaxing during the games itself as it used to be in former releases.

Other new features of the game are for example the enhanced possibiites to interact with fans (you can set up special fan days now to improve the relationship between fans and players). The transfers of the players can now be managed from a central station. The financial mechanisms are more sophisticated allowing more kinds of possible interactions and actions. Finally the graphics have been improved and players heads are now displayed in 3D.

Pros & Cons

  • most engrossing edition yet, football management refined, much improved, cool options, classic football manager gameplay
  • not a total revamp, bugs galore, still a few niggles, addictive as hell, completely addictive

One area that suffers in Football Manager 2008 is the transfer system. It was increasingly annoying to receive continual offers on specific players, to the tune of once every week from the same club for the same player, when the player is listed at a set transfer value and listed as indispensable to the club. There is a lack of negotiation on transfer offers and take it or leave it seems too often to be the AI's only negotiating stance. It appears that league reputation... Read more

Evolution is a staple of both life and the world of computer games. Considering long running series of games, the rule might be succinctly put as evolve or die. Many sequels or follow-on titles have faced this minimum requirement and failed. Sports Interactive remains a company that has avoided this with their Football Manager (or World Soccer Manager on the U.S. shores) series. There have been occasional stumbles, but the series itself continues to enthrall... Read more

It’s been a funny year for sports titles, at least here in Europe. Skate wandered into the fray and stole the spotlight from the tired beaten horse that is the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series whilst FIFA 2008 surprised us all with a very decent, if far from perfect, experience. PES2008 was also surprising in that it failed to evolve in any way and I was also disappointed with the very shallow NBA Street: Homecourt earlier in the year. But at least we can count on SI... As I said in the beginning, there are two sides when it comes to the attitude people have about this game: those who love it and those who would never play it. It's just a matter of taste. I can't say to those who didn't like the other games in the series to go try this one out because it will change their opinion about the game. I definitely can't tell the fans not to try this game, because it's a really good one. It has its flaws and bugs, specially when it comes to... Read more

According to me, Football Manager is a great example of improvement by the years. FM 2007 was good, but 08 is better! This newer version is definitely worth buying, even for owners of Football Manager 2007 (even if it only was to update your rosters). The real-time tactics are a great extra and form a great addition to the possibility of “becoming the manager”, plus it offers a direct visualization of your tactical adjustments. My advice: if you’re interested in... Read more

The geeks will inherit the football world at least. Management sims often cause people to behave oddly. You‘ll see a look of abject revulsion or a mysterious, far–away twinkle in their eyes. For fans, this outing is a real treat; the most addictive virtual spreadsheet is back. Moving on in leaps and bounds form the 2006 game, this time round you‘ll be able to call in the individual players to voice their opinions about tactics and signings adding a new level of mid...
