A Series Reborn

RPGamer
26 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is what I like to refer to as a love letter to fans of the series. The game is an MMORPG that offers many nostalgic references to earlier games, such as the classic job system, chocobos, magitek armor, airships, and monsters such as puddings, cactuars, and tonberries. The game is still an MMO, but as I detailed in my impression it is quite different from Square Enix's prior venture into the online genre with Final Fantasy XI .

Test Final Fantasy XIV

Generation NT
7 September 2011

Popular franchise continues as MMO, with fantasy violence.

Common Sense Media
27 August 2011
  • Summary: Parents need to know that Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG (Massively Multi-player Online Role Playing Game) that requires players to pay not only for the core software but also for a monthly subscription. It has fantasy blood shown as players fight fantasy forces of evil. The game can be incredibly fun to play and may prove addictive. Parents might want to keep a watch on gameplay time limits. Note, too, that online play allows players to communicate by text.

Final Fantasy XIV

The Gamers Temple

  • Excerpt: My experience with MMOs goes back a full month. Yeah, I'm not really an expert when it comes to MMOs with the only two games I've played have both happening within the last month. The first was, I hope you're sitting down for this, Hello Kitty Online. That one had some issues to be sure but while it was very cute and colorful it wasn't that interesting of a game or at least not to an older dude like myself.

  • Summary: It may well look pretty, but beneath it all there lacks any amount of depth that all MMOs need.

Final Fantasy XIV

19 November 2010
  • Conclusion: Ultimately the PC version of Final Fantasy XI is somewhat incomplete and it feels like the development team weren’t given the time to really give the game any real polish. In fairness, Square Enix is obviously aware of this, having extended the games free trial period multiple times, but it’s disappointing all the same.

  • Pros: Ease of play: This franchise has historically had a steep learning curve. This latest iteration may be friendlier than its predecessor, but nevertheless is still challenging to understand and master., Educational value: Kids who play MMOGs will inevitably learn teamwork as they discover that working in groups will always yield greater rewards., Online interaction: The online experience can vary greatly between players. The game has the usual protections of a default w...
  • Cons: Messages: Players are engaged in defeating evil, but violence plays a significant role in gameplay and is the primary means to many ends., Violence: Players fight forces of evil with swords, bows and arrows, magic, and other weapons both realistic and fantastical. Cut scenes display acts of violence where humans are hurt and monsters killed, with colored blood spilling., Sex: Some outfits for character avatars can be sexy and there is some sexy talk, as when a charact...

Final Fantasy XIV

GameTrailers
8 October 2010
  • Excerpt: Square Enix's latest excursion in the realm of MMOs is a consequential one indeed. Bearing the weighty honor of also being a numbered installment in the venerable series, Final Fantasy XIV enters a crowded market already replete with great games. Will this long-awaited MMO make a splash like its predecessor did so many years ago, or is it a black mark on its lineage?
