Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom

Gameguru Mania
13 May 2004
  • Excerpt: There's no doubt that each game in Impressions Games' city-building series has been an incremental upgrade to the previous one. The series began with a Roman Empire installment Caesar III, then continued with Pharaoh - the building sim set in the Egyptian landscape, and finally culminated with Zeus, Greek city-state simulator and its own expansion pack, which added a bit of Greek mythology.

Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom

  • Conclusion: The tutorials really aren't that much help either, as they don't provide enough information as you are playing through the mission. The manual really is the best bet. I know; manuals are for lamers, but in this case if you are new to the series, (as I was, relatively speaking) the manual is indispensable. The cheat sheet is also extremely useful when in the middle of the game as it provides most of your essential info stripped down and into a condensed format.

  • Excerpt: "Impressions Games hands the reigns to BreakAway Games this time in order to fashion yet another title in their City-Building series. So is Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom just another well-trod road through a new civilization, or does it manage to be something bigger, better, and greater than its predecessors?

Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom

Game Over Online
10 September 2002
  • Excerpt: Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom is a sprawling piece of work that encompasses the first half of Chinese dynastic history. Its scope and vantage point, however, is from the single city, although later on, you'll get a chance to rule more than one city. The municipal feel gives Emperor a unique looking glass into the rise of China.

BigPond GameArena

  • Conclusion: Overall, the gameplay isn't overwhelmingly innovative or new. If you've played the other games in the series and know them backwards, you might find things a bit stale. However, the basis of the game is significantly different enough to warrant a look. The Chinese setting and basic gameplay mechanics seem very well thought-out and balanced, and it is still definitely a fun (and madly addictive) game to play. Next: The Graphics and Audio...
