Instead, expect hundreds of hours of fan service condensed into a familiar experience. With Dragon Age: Origins BioWare is giving something back to lovers of Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate. Its role-playing is superb, but not revolutionary. It is a fantasy RPG so obviously crafted for the PC that it seems pointless to consider playing it on an alternative platform. It is an experience as compelling as it is archaic. This trip back in time to the glory days of the... Read more
Video games that are “epic” in both senses of the word - “awesomeness” and “invoking a heroic poem” - form the upper echelon of gaming: Okami , The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time , God of War , The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion . Dragon Age: Origins aims to join this prestigious company by channeling the spirit of J.R.R. Tolkein through the body of BioWare and by harkening back to a time when one man’s (or woman’s) strength could change the world.... Read more
Proof that even reviewers get their arses handed to them. Bioware aren't bad at this RPG lark. Since they set up shop in '95 they've given us Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights Of The Old Republic, and Mass Effect to name just a handful of their contributions to the genre. Dragon Age: Origins was touted as the spiritual successor to the much-loved Baldur's Gate series but a goofy name and uninspiring trailers resulted in there being much less excitement... Read more
As I sit down and look through the game, broken down in pieces and put under a scope, I realize that something is amiss. The title excels at nothing, and every aspect of it has at least one flaw. But Dragon Age: Origins is so much more than the sum of its parts, and the flawed gems that make up the game come together to form a perfectly shaped diamond. The title provides an enticing experience, binding you to the story, to the characters and to your sit, and it won't let... Read more
But we are really needle picking here obviously. As I mentioned before, Dragon Age: Origins is a very ambitious game with everything it tries to incorporate from the advanced morality system over the sheer size of the game to the freshly created realm. And as it goes with big and ambitious projects, there is a lot of room for error and failure and while not everything in the game is a crushing victory for Bioware, most of it is. Wherever the game doesn’t beat the... Read more
I read all the reviews and was led to believe this was the best RPG ever; the plot, character history, immersive world, etc. Played for about 10 hours now and can't keep wanting to go back to Morrowind. This isn't a bad game and certainly makes the hours fly by, but it's so linear! Do this, OK, then do that, OK - there's no option to explore (you can't, everything seems to be off-limits) - if I'm missing something, please tell me. There's no challenges, every quest is... ~~~~~~~~~~~ INTRODUCTION ~~~~~~~~~~~ Every once in a while in the world of PC gaming, a title comes along that redefines its genre - a game so imaginative and innovative, that it becomes the new standard-bearer in its class. I have been a fan of Dungeons & Dragons style PC Role-Playing Games (RPG's) since industry stalwarts Bioware first developed Baldur's Gate in the late 1990's. They followed this up with the excellent Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights series of... Read more
There has been much made of the DAO storyline and given the AAA pedigree of Bioware there was indeed much to expect. However, if you have spent any time playing fantasy RPG's or watching movies of this ilk, you will find nothing new here. That certainly doesn't mean the experience wasn't enjoyable, but nor was it particularly creative or transcendent which is required if you are going to start giving out 95%+ scores. If you have seen or read LOTR, you will recognize much... Read more
First of all, let me just say that I very much enjoy Baldur's Gate (made by BioWare, the same people Read more
The Good: To paraphrase Peter Travers- What I feel for this game isn't mere admiration, it's mad, mad love. Dragon Age: Origins proves that you don't necessarily have to be an FPS or feature the most cutting-edge, video-card-rending graphics to be immersive. And this game takes immersion to whole new level. Ferelden is a living, breathing kingdom with its own rich history, culture, races and even books, poems and songs. In fact, this is perhaps the most extensively... Read more
