Desperados : Wanted Dead or Alive

Gameguru Mania
3 May 2004
  • Excerpt: Desperados : Wanted Dead or Alive is the first strategy game ever to combine a movie-based and-story driven atmosphere of an adventure game with the intellectual challenge of a real time tactic game. Desperados has been developed by German developer Spellbound Entertainment - maybe you tried to play their Airline Tycoon , a weird sim game released last year. So I didn't expect much when I have seen this title first time.

Desperados

The Gamers Temple
14 February 2004
  • Excerpt: The Old West has been largely ignored as a setting for computer games. Desperados sets out to correct this oversight by taking the player through a series of missions set in a wide variety of Western locales, all tied together by a story that will evoke memories of classic Westerns.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive

The Armchair Empire
20 March 2003
  • Conclusion: High tension is the name of the game for DWDA. At the start of nearly every mission the map is crawling with bad guys who would just as soon fill you full of holes as look at you. The first series of missions has Cooper assembling his team, rescuing them from bad situations. But you won’t have access to all of the characters until you’re nearly finished the game. Even then you rarely have access to all your characters at the same time.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive

Game Over Online
27 August 2001
  • Excerpt: Is a clone a good thing or a bad thing? Three years ago Pyro Studios released Commandos, a squad-based military strategy game that was all about sneaking around and killing silently. Now, just a month before Pyro is set to release Commandos 2 (hopefully), Spellbound Software and Infogrames have teamed up to release Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive.

  • Excerpt: With the odd rare exception like LucasArts ’ classic shooter Outlaws , Western-themed PC games--especially good Western-themed PC games--are more scarce than cattle rustlers at a sheriff’s hoedown. Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive is one of those worthwhile Western games, aimed squarely at strategy fans like a six-shooter pointed at a stagecoach robber’s heart.

Desperados

  • Excerpt: Just before I began playing this game I was informed that it was a whole lot like the brilliant games Commandos. For some reason I haven't played Commandos for more than 5 minutes once, so this was something I was looking forward to.

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive

ActionTrip
9 May 2001
  • Conclusion: There is unfortunately no multiplayer mode, not even cooperative as in Commandos. On the other hand, that is not too much of a flaw, as this kind of a game is not meant for multiplayer gaming after all. More than twenty missions guarantee nice and long fun... if you overcome the game difficulty and occasional slow-downs.
  • Pros: Contagious game, a lot of improvements to the Commandos concept, interesting characters and levels;
  • Cons: It is hard; you will need time to get used to the commands. It is still a copycat.

Desperados: Wanted Dead Or Alive

Gamecell
19 October 2007
  • Conclusion: Desperados is still a very good game. It challenges you all the way through, makes you think a lot , and is completely different to 98% of the RTS games available for the PC at the moment. OK, so the game doesn’t quite get the difficulty curve right, the controls are a bit off, and the slightly aged graphics certainly aren’t the best around (tasty 2-D characters on 3-D backgrounds), but for a tenner this is the best in the West.
  • Pros: Original gameplay, Challenging missions, It’s not set in WW2!
  • Cons: Graphics are pretty naff now, Controls are clunky, No friendly AI, Weird difficulty curve.
