Excerpt: Every now and then a developer takes the risk to break the mold of tried and true designs and ventures off into the unknown. Sometimes these experiments succeed and catch on, other times they go unnoticed and a unique creation gets forgotten. One such company that pushes beyond the confines of typical design is Gas Powered Games, makers of the wonderful Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege series.
Excerpt: Demigod is a fast-paced hybrid role-playing/strategy game from Gas Powered Games. Players select hero Demigods, outfit them with numerous power-ups and potions and unleash them in team based mayhem. Each team has a base to defend, the ability to spawn minions to fight on their behalf, flags to capture and gold to mine. “But that sounds just like DotA!” I hear you say. Well, yes, because it is.
Excerpt: It is said that a great game is easy to learn but difficult to master. Demigod has the latter part down—the former, not so much. Veterans of the Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, from which this game draws much of its inspiration, will have an easy time grasping the excellent concept, but to most other players it’s a very new form of multiplayer role-playing game, and the lack of tutorials makes learning the ropes a challenge.
Summary: Parents need to know that this Teen-rated game does contain some fantasy violence, but it's light on blood and not very graphic due to the top-down view of the action (more of a bird's eye commander perspective as opposed to a fighter's view from the front lines). A few sexual and alcohol-related remarks or written words are in the game but nothing too risqué at all. A female warrior wears a very skimpy outfit.
Conclusion: strength of the game: as a would-be deity, you look damn good. But while the demigods look fantastic, the minions which serve as your cannon fodder suffer a distinct sameness to them. The minion models are diverse, but they only come in two flavors when it comes to their textures, and that feels like an opportunity missed. Good creatures could have been more luminous and vital looking while evil creatures could have been more twisted and corrupted.
