  • Excerpt: Minimalistic mechanics can be tricky to pull off. Some developers pad their less interactive titles with copious amounts of cinematic sequences, while others attempt to barrage you with artsy, ambiguous imagery in the hopes of conveying some vague meaning. There are some, however, who have discovered a means of effectively implementing minimalism without using the aforementioned examples as a crutch.

Matryoshka Simulator 2012

Game Debate
21 October 2012
  • Excerpt: Being a PC gamer – that is to say being locked away in my darkened room, posting elitist comments about quick saves on PC-only websites whilst stroking my £80 backlit keyboard – I’d not heard of Stacking until it had actually been released. This is one of the downsides of being such a gaming snob - you may miss out on some console treats that pass under your cocked snook. Sometimes – sometimes - it pays to keep tabs on the proles.
  • Pros: Fantastic idea, Gorgeous presentation, High replay value
  • Cons: Fairly short, Price is a bit steep

Review: Stacking

New Gamer Nation
30 July 2012
  • Conclusion: Overall, Stacking is a small, but beautifully formed game.  It is certainly worth visiting the charming world of Russian dolls where the game takes place. Stacking is a casual game, evidenced by its easy difficulty, but will appeal to any player who wants to take a break from more serious and difficult games.  It is a memorable and unique adventure, but one that I will be unlikely to return to.

  • Summary: Last year, the delightful world of Stacking opened its miniature gates to players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Now, the lively Russian nesting dolls who populate this handcrafted adventure have migrated to the PC, and these delicate dolls have suffered nary a crack in the transition. Stacking invites you to visit a place that's bursting with charming characters, endearing visual details, and satisfying puzzles to solve.
  • Pros: Beautiful world with a charming, handcrafted feel, Dozens of dolls to stack into with fun abilities to use, Satisfying puzzles with numerous solutions, Hi-jinks encourage experimenting with dolls' abilities
  • Cons: Story can be completed quickly and easily, Minor camera issues and visual blemishes

  • Excerpt: Oh my gosh... it's finally arrived. After a long wait, Stacking, from the beautifully twisted minds of Tim Schafer and Double-Fine Productions, has come to PC. For those who don't know, Stacking is a third person puzzle-adventure type game, where you play Charlie, a tiny boy who has the power to control other people by stacking inside them, and he has to save his family from the evil Baron, who is the main force behind Child Labour in this victorian setting.

  • Summary: Isaac Clarke, the unluckiest space engineer of the 26th century, is more unfortunate than ever in Dead Space 2. 2008's superb Dead Space took the style of survival horror shooter action exemplified by games like Resident Evil 4 and meshed it with an atmospheric deep-space setting and some terrific, distinctly sci-fi gameplay elements, creating something that felt simultaneously familiar and unique.
  • Pros: Campaign starts strong and ends strong, Dismembering necromorphs is as thrilling as ever, Some great new necromorph types, Wonderfully atmospheric visuals and sound design, Exhilarating multiplayer
  • Cons: No significant gameplay advances over the first game, Single-player falls into predictable rhythm for a while, Some dull objectives

Dead Space 2

Game Boyz

  • Excerpt: Some may call it “Strategic Dismemberment,” others might call it “Gratuitous Violence.” Whatever the case may be, Dead Space is back with even more slicing and severing of limbs than ever before. The original Dead Space game was without question one of my favourite games from 2008. The single player campaign had me hooked and left me ‘jumpy’ for weeks on end.
