Crusader Kings II

Destructoid
2 September 2013
  • Summary: Videogames and history have a wonderful and colorful relationship. Thousands of years of warfare, culture clashes, technological advances, political upheaval and intrigue have given developers a massive pool of content to work with and it's given players countless "what if?" scenarios and outlets for their power fantasies. Despite this, 2004's Crusader Kings managed to stand out from the crowd with its focus on dynasties and the elaborate web of medieval relationships.

The Old Gods Make A New Comeback

GIN
8 July 2013
  • Excerpt: I absolutely love medieval history. I have dug myself into a great many books learning about the old kingdoms. So when I was given the opportunity to take control of these kingdoms I was happy. Paradox Interactive always does a great job with historical simulations that push the boundaries, and Crusader Kings and Crusader Kings II are among their best.

Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods

Strategy Informer
20 June 2013
  • Conclusion: If you’ve never picked up a CKII expansion before, The Old Gods would be the perfect place to start. Saying that, there’s no reason you shouldn’t pick up the other expansions either, but we guess it depends on what you like to play as. One of this generation’s greatest strategy games has just gotten a whole lot better, and with the recent news that Paradox have committed to another two years’ worth of expansions for this game, God only knows where this game is going to...

Crusader Kings II : The Old Gods

Thunderbolt Games
19 June 2013
  • Excerpt: Pagans have more fun. That’s the lesson to be learned from Paradox Interactive’s latest expansion, Crusader Kings II: The Old Gods . For the first time in the series you can play as the heathen Norsemen, along with assorted other pagan infidels across Europe and the East. It’s an addition that increases the player’s options to a truly staggering degree.

Crusader Kings II Review (PC)

Softpedia
13 August 2012
  • Excerpt: Rather than simply telling her to drop the plot so that I can forgive the whole sordid affair, I decided to imprison her, something that Ota, my brother and her husband, found hard to swallow. Relations between us quickly went down to -100, which pretty much meant that at some point he was going to betray me and rise up in open revolt.
  • Pros: + Deep character-driven interactions, + Solid historical simulation, + Great User Interface
  • Cons: - Limited plot scope, - Some hard-to-learn mechanics

Crusader Kings II

  • Excerpt: You've heard the story a thousand times. You, the fearless leader of the country of your choice, are given control of your medieval fiefdom of choice, and it is up to you to unite Europe under your rule. However, Crusader Kings II is an entirely different beast than such well-known titles as Medieval II: Total War.

Crusader Kings II – PC Game Review

Armchair General
16 March 2012
  • Excerpt: I’ll be honest here; I’m a bit of a Paradox fanboy. I’ve been buying and playing their games since the original Europa Universalis , and especially like the Victoria series. However, I was never a Crusader Kings fanatic; there are those on the very active Paradox forums for whom there is literally no other game. I played the original Crusader Kings , and thought it was a good game but not really my style.
  • Pros: Excellent gameplay, graphics and sound; overall a high quality strategic simulation
  • Cons: Subject matter may not appeal to all; game has a learning curve; combat lacks detail

Crusader Kings II

Strategy Informer
21 February 2012
  • Conclusion: Whilst the subject matter and the set-up may not be to everyone’s liking, Crusader Kings II is definitely the most impressive Paradox game to date. The game mechanics are an interesting twist on a well-known genre, the code itself is highly polished, and it’s just a really fun and interesting game to play. Some minor improvements could still be made, and this really is a game of patience, even more so than other Paradox games.
