Excerpt: To be honest, we really wanted to dislike Company of Heroes 2 . As is tradition whenever we have a new strategy game, we immediately fired up the game’s skirmish mode and cracked open a delicious can of soda to accompany (what we assumed would be) a short march to victory. Although we weren’t playing as the Germans in this match, it sure felt that way.
Summary: As both a sequel and an RTS game, it doesn't excel in key areas to help it stand out from the rest of the crowd. Instead, it feels like another expansion that happens to have more content and more multiplayer options than one might expect.
Pros: Solid RTS mechanics, New weather system, Fun multiplayer
Cons: More of the same, Mediocre narrative, Bad accents
Summary: Company of Heroes 2 is a well-made historically-based World War 2 RTS. Just like the prior Heroes games. It’s not my particular bag, but I recognize that the game is solid affair. I had some issues with it, game speed, and overall structure, but if Starcraft isn’t your bag, Company of Heroes is likely right up your alley.
Excerpt: As much as the West would like you to believe otherwise, it was actually the Russians who did the real heavy-lifting defeating the Nazis in World War II. Sure, the Americans like to talk themselves up, and in the Pacific they were da’ bomb (literally), but which front would you rather be stationed at?
Conclusion: For Company of Heroes veterans, Company of Heroes 2 feels a little like coming home. Yes, the game sticks closely to the formula that made the original such a triumph, but in this case familiarity fails to breed contempt. Whether you're coming to Company of Heroes for the first time, or re-enlisting, you'll find a game that turns warfare into an art-form as infantry swarms across the battlefield, tanks churn the earth and fire cascades from the sky in stirring symphony.
Excerpt: All Quiet on the Eastern Front. More than a few folks call the original Company of Heroes the greatest RTS of all time. There are a few others who'd scoff at such a statement, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts they didn't play it — if nothing else, it belongs in the conversation. I was playing it on and off all the way through the night before I went to preview its sequel, Company of Heroes 2 , for the first time, so you might say I'm a fan.
Conclusion: Viewed side by side, it might be tough to distinguish Company of Heroes 2 from its predecessor. When examined up close, the changes introduced to distinguish warfare on the Eastern Front of World War II from the Western are as problematic as they are interesting. However, that comparison is to one of the finest real-time strategy games ever made, and being mostly as good as that makes this an excellent game on its own.
Pros: Great graphics, Tactical gameplay, Challenging campaign
