Combat Flight Simulator 3
15 July 2005
Summary: All the excitement of a Hornet, but slower than the Wright Flyer.
Pros: Excellent presentation all around; stunning graphics with great aircraft models and terrain; sound effects that will blow you away; a remarkable reproduction of history that allows you to re-write the events of WWII.
Cons: Controls are complex and will take some time to get used to.
Excerpt: The latest franchise addition to Microsoft's established arcade flight simulator project, Combat Flight Simulator 3, is examined by Allan Parent. Find out if it flies the franchise to new heights or if it fails to live up to its potential.
Excerpt: Microsoft’s latest “Combat Flight Simulator 3” makes quite a statement in its title. Can it live up to it? In this latest installment of of the MS Combat flight simulator series you can take control of 24 aircrafts from three different countries. Which will range from huge bombers to prop fighters, and even a few of the earliest jet airplanes.
Conclusion: CFS3 isn't the final word in flight sims, but it is a good game. While it is surpassed by IL2-Sturmovik in a few technical areas, for a combination of beautiful graphics and good gameplay, you really can't go past Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3.
Conclusion: As an interesting aside, I dusted off the original version of Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator and installed it to compare how Microsoft's Combat Sim series has moved on in the past few years. Well guess what - I found that CFS1, which also covers the European Air War, has almost as many different aircraft types to fly, the ground textures are crisp and sharp, the cockpits look better, and it runs like lightning on my machine.
Pros: Good choice of different types of missions., Excellent control interface., Some graphical effects, such as aircraft damage, look really good…
Cons: …However, some effects, such as ground and cockpit detail, do not!, Runs appallingly on low to mid range systems., Even on high-end systems it needs a lot of tweaking., Overall programming and presentation is poor.
