You wake up in a dark space. Your legs and arms tied to a crude object Russians refer to as a chair. You have been captured by the KGB, tortured, and are being pried into signing a confession of an assassination you had no part in. It is 1986 during what people refer to as the "Cold War" and you are Mathew Carter, American reporter. Now, if you wish to survive in Mother Russia you must use your wit, speed, and a hint of luck or you can blow yourself up with gas canisters... Read more
The problems with Cold War are just far too apparent and wide reaching to recommend this to anyone apart from a meagre few. While the stealth mechanic is implemented fairly well, and enemy AI at least stands up to initial tests, there’s just far too little excitement throughout the entire course of play. The X-Ray camera proves to be a novel feature, and one that’s bound to be picked up and copied, but everything else has been done not only to a higher technical... Read more
When you take into account the budget price of Cold War it all makes a lot more sense, but its problems, particularly in the PC version, make it hard to recommend. Stealth aficionados out there may get a bit of fun out of it, but there are better (and now equally priced) stealth titles out there. Certainly, the gadget system does add a nice twist to the genre, but it feels tacked on, and doesn't integrate with the rest of the game well enough. Cold War is merely... Read more
It's a well-designed stealth-action game with challenging gameplay and a compelling story -- it's too bad it only works once in a while. Read more
Splinter Cell fans will be in for a familiar experience in Cold War, a competent but unremarkable stealth action game that puts you in the middle of a Soviet conspiracy. Read more
If you search for reviews of this game on the web, you'll find some real hatchet jobs: mediocre, failed imitation of the Sam Fisher games, and so on. Play it, and you may feel differently. This probably is a game that climbed on the stealth bandwagon after the success of Splinter Cell - but SC itself was built on other games (the wonderful Thief series, most notably). But it is more than mere imitation: it has real character and atmosphere. Moreover, the gameplay is (for... Read more
Fun: Surprisingly good quality, quirky little stealth romp, easy to play and pleasing to the eyes (even by today's standards). By no means a substitute for Sam Fisher or even master Thief Garrett (my hero!!), but considering the price, not a bad way to spend a rainy weekend (or snowy weekend, for that matter, comrade...). At first I thought it was just the demo but I tried to play the full version and it did the same thing. I kept getting "Not Responding" errors right before trying to play the first level over and over until I just had to uninstall the game. This game also loads StarForce protection drivers onto your computer. Some people have had terrible problems with these drivers. Dreamcatcher has virtually no support on this game too, just updated Starforce drivers. You're taking a... Read more or see product
Not a bad little stealth\action\war game, even if it is a bit of a Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell clone. The plot is gripping, with some cool twists, despite being a bit thin and very unrealistic, and certain tasks can be a bit cumbersome, e.g. carrying the body of an unconscious woman around a nuclear plant for what seems like an eternity. The graphics are stimulating without trying to be too impressive. There's some amusing voice-acting in there too. The game is very... Read more
