Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

Thunderbolt Games
26 July 2013
  • Excerpt: It dawned on me while playing Techland’s thoroughly enjoyable shooter Call of Juarez: Gunslinger just how satisfying the traditional Western arsenal is to use. It’s because low-technology guns change how you play. Take the common or garden revolver. There’s a satisfying sense of importance to each click of the mouse when you only have six shots in your gun. You can’t just fire off twenty rounds and slap a new magazine in, instead you have to make every shot count.

  • Summary: The Call of Juarez series from Techland has seen some major ups and downs throughout its history, as it started off rather well, with the original and the Bound in Blood iteration, which were set in the Wild West, but then moved to the present day, with the lackluster The Cartel
  • Pros: +Fun arcade shooter gameplay, +Impressive upgrade system, +Rewarding combo system
  • Cons: -Low-quality graphics, -Annoying boss encounters, -Duels take a lot of practice

Expert Review

Realm of Gaming
7 June 2013
  • Excerpt: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is a first-person shooter developed by Techland, released for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. I took a look at the PC version of the game, and must say, Techland is doing things right. To begin, if you couldn't tell based on the name, Call of Jaurez is set in the wild west, and you play as the namesake gunslinger and bounty hunter Silas Greaves.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

  • Conclusion: Call of Juarez Gunslinger is Techland at their best and the most fun I have had with a western experience since Red Dead Redemption . It’s kind of a shame to know that their A team was working on this while Dead Island Riptide was thrown together but I’m grateful that Gunslinger exists because it’s a solid and fun first person shooter with some great hooks in it.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

High-Def Digest
23 May 2013
  • Summary: The Call of Juarez franchise has had its share of failure, particularly 2011's horrific Call of Juarez: The Cartel . I was a huge fan of the original Call of Juarez , particularly the campaign's focus on Reverend Ray McCall's gun-slinging past. Looking to redeem the series, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger adopts the arcade shooter route and focuses on a strong, entertaining single player campaign to win back fans.

Game Review: Call of Juarez: Gunslinger [PC/XBLA/PSN]

push-start.co.uk
20 June 2013
  • Excerpt: Everyone remembers Call of Juarez: The Cartel right? Even though it was something you’d want to forget, like a bad dream in the middle of the night. The entire setting was a bit unneeded, seeing as how we have tons of games in the modern setting, and CoJ is supposed to be a western game. On the other hand, CoJ: Bound in Blood was absolutely enthralling with such a beautiful storyline. So people were disappointed when we didn’t get a true successor to it.

Call of Juarez: Gunslinger review

Gameplanet
5 June 2013
  • Summary: Gunslinger is a solid return to form for Techland, anchoring their colourful arcade take on the Old West in a story told with a great deal of heart and good humour. If only other parts of the game showed such originality.
  • Pros: Strong, sometimes thoughtful narrative. Clever use of Greaves' narration as a game mechanic. Stunning landscape design. Vibrant, briskly-paced score-attack action. Good-looking cut-scenes.
  • Cons: Shooter mechanics feel like a bit of a rehash. Level design is repeated too often for comfort.
