  • Summary: While it does little to stray from the Call of Duty formula established with Modern Warfare, World at War is still a solid and enjoyable shooter.

Call of Duty: World at War

11 February 2009
  • Excerpt: The odds have always been stacked against Call of Duty: World at War. This sequel revisits an undeniably exhausted FPS setting—World War II—and wasn’t designed by series creator Infinity Ward, but Treyarch has delivered a sufficiently compelling shooter. World at War doesn’t bring any lasting innovations to the FPS genre, but it has enough unrelenting shootouts and dramatically scripted events to keep us immersed in the action.
  • Pros: Lengthy single-player campaign is engaging; fun co-op mode.
  • Cons: Unimpressive AI; tired setting; makes us long for Call of Duty 4.

Call of Duty: World at War

  • Excerpt: First Impressions My reaction is The theater for next gens war is set. While many might feel like taking a step backward by plunging into the WWII chaos, a franchise far beaten and milked than a dead horse, Treyarch still believe there’s some life left in that proverbial carcass. For many (and Infinity Ward themselves), the developers of the latest iteration to the COD family are nothing more than a sack of menacing copy-cats. And it might be true to some extent.

Call of Duty: World at War

Game Vortex

  • Excerpt: When it comes to visuals on the PC, the recent Call of Duty franchise has been better than average in more than one way. This year's title is no exception, as Treyarch's World at War offers up a great look to go with its equally great audio. From the initial moments of the game, the on-screen action is shown through excellent environments and authentic player models and weapons. The game's gorgeous visuals come at a high cost, though.

  • Excerpt: Moving back to the CoD’s saga roots, World at War takes us back to World War II. Well, a few snapshots of the immense 6-year conflict that is. There are two main theaters this time, the Pacific and the Eastern Front. The player follows the paths of two soldiers, fighting for the USMC and the Red Army in a series of heavily scripted missions and ‘levels on rails’.
  • Pros: Quality voice acting, Reichstag scenario, flamethrower weapon.
  • Cons: Bad weapon implementation, very short campaign, mediocre sound effects, disjointed scenarios, low immersion factor.

World at War

The Gamers Temple
20 August 2008
  • Excerpt: World at War is a strategic World War II war game on the grandest of scales – the entire globe is your battlefield. While war games on this scale can often be quite complex affairs, World at War does a good job of abstracting many of the details that come with managing a global conflict. Casual gamers can even leave production, research, and other planning operations to the computer so that they can just have fun directing armies and navies.

  • Conclusion: Call of Duty: World at War is one of the best, most polished first-person shooters available for the Wii.
  • Pros: Beautiful visuals and cutscenes. Makes good use of the Wii Zapper. Polished feel.
  • Cons: Control style can be finicky. Quirky multiplayer format will take some getting used to.
