Call of Duty - Modern Warfare

Call of Duty - Modern Warfare, is the latest and fourth title in the well known series of action ego shooters. The games was developped by the programmers of Infinity Ward and is published by Activision. It was released November 2007. Due to violent and brutal contents, the game is not allowed to be sold to children and teenagers under 18 years of age. It provides a single-player and a multi-player modus.

Gameplay

Unlike the predecessor, Call of Duty 4 is not taking place in World War II, the action unfolds on three different battlefields: The first one is represented by a bombed and almost destroyed town somewhere in the desert in a country of the Middle East, where American GI’s fight against Arabian rebels. The second scenario is an empty town in the Russian Taiga, completely overgrown with plants. The last battle takes place in an old storehouse between the British special sevice SAS and some Russian elite troops.

In the muliplayer mode, the games is based on a bonus system. After completion of specific tasks or well tackled situations, the players are rewarded with additional equipment, skills or weapons. This might be a radar system, where enemies can be detected, an air strike, causing huge damage, or a helicopter (which can, besides, not be directly controlled by the player, as Call of Duty 4 is an infantry shooter only). All in all, players can earn up to 70 different arms and equipment tools. In order to prevent experienced players from getting too powerful, the player can only use three different weapons or tools at the same time.

There are also some kind of special upgrades, the "Perks", that help to evolve character and skills of the player, just like you might know it from a role adventure. There is a Juggeraut upgrade that increases your armour, another perk enforces your shooting power.

Another feature of the game is the so-called kill cam. In case the player goes down, you see the last seconds from the point of view of your own killer. The game is nothing for campers, as the ennemies are moving around constantly.

With all this glowing praise, one could walk away with the idea that the game is perfect. Well, unfortunately, it isn't. It is truly excellent, but there are a few kinks that should've been worked out. As I mentioned before, the singleplayer is woefully short. A simple cooperative mode would've increased the replayability of the story a great deal. Those modes are fairly standard in shooters these days, and it's surprising that a game built around squad tactics has no... Read more

Few series get up to part "4" in any medium and even fewer are any good. Call of Duty 4 is an exception. It's the best game Infinity Ward has ever made and has set the new standard for modern, realistic shooters. Read more

Call of Duty 4 is a squad based tactical first person shooter. Unlike all previous installments of the series, CoD4 is set in the present day making full use of all the nifty gizmos and gadgets available to the modern combat specialist. Players alternate controlling a flashy, guns-blazing US Marine and a stealthy, ninja-like SAS while trying to regain possession of terrorist-controlled nuclear weapons. A typical level involves mowing down waves of enemies rushing at y... Read more

The only problem is getting to the top of the multiplayer heap, the learning curve on most servers is brutal. Don’t expect to start with anything that resembles elegance, because you are going to be stuck with the worst weapons and worst perks until you earn them. For the first 15 hours, I would follow around a guy carrying the G3 and pick it up whenever he got dropped – that was how I survived. (Not pretty, and I’m not proud of myself – but it’s better than using dou... Read more

It's a very good game. Probably the best in the series. It's modern - no more WW2 weapons and settings. You fight on a ship, at night (they did a very good job of this), sneak behind enemy lines, and the sniper setpiece is just incredible. To be ... Read more

War is hell. And hell can be great. With such a huge fanfare of excitement and an equally huge and well–deserved fan base for the series, Call of Duty leaps into a typical poignant modern–day war. Out against a Middle–East threat with some stolen Russian nukes, every sniper shot excellence from Call of Duty‘s history has been carried over to Modern Warfare. This title simply excels. It throws you into the deep end, into a frenetic and hugely populated world full of en... Read more
