Excerpt: Blade and Sword from developer Pixel Studio is an action-RPG that suffers from being released at a time when gamers expect much more from their RPGs. Had this game been released years ago it might have looked and fared better than it does now. I was optimistic when I previewed an early beta of Blade and Sword last year but the final retail version just has too many flaws that are difficult to ignore.
Excerpt: The developers of Blade & Sword are big fans of Diablo II. In fact, they like it so much that they’ve produced a game so like the source of their inspiration that it could easily be mistaken for a mod rather than a standalone game. However, like most clones Blade & Sword may look a lot like the original but it lacks a soul. The game captures the interface, mechanics, and look of Diablo II, but the exciting gameplay was lost in the translation.
Excerpt: Blade and Sword is an action role-playing game from Chinese based developer Pixel Studio, which combines Diablo-like action elements and Street Fighter arcade combat together. This action-RPG takes place in ancient China and heavy use of martial arts, special moves, and combos. In the game you travel through a variety of environments (40 levels which are spread across 3 chapters), including forests, caves, swamps, ruined villages, and palaces, as you slaughter your way...
Excerpt: Some games just shouldn’t be imported. One such game is Blade & Sword from Chinese developer Pixel Software (or maybe Pixel Studio). It purportedly “combines Diablo -like action elements and Street Fighter arcade combat together.” That sounds promising enough, but, oh my, once you start up the game it doesn’t take long to realize the developers had no idea what they were doing, or that they were masochists, or that they were in some weird time warp circa 1996.
Excerpt: Sometimes I pine for old school games. You know the sort of games that came out before there were 'genres' of formulaic also-rans, back when the entire industry was growing and expanding in exciting directions. One of those old school games that set a new standard for PC gaming was Diablo and its sequel. Of course, as with all successes, there have been many imitations produced over the years.
Summary: Blade and Sword is a Diablo-style action role-playing game set in China. It has a heavy emphasis on fighting-game elements such as combos, special attacks, and blocking. The game actually pulls off these aspects really well and can be exciting at times. Unfortunately, a poor translation, very repetitive gameplay, and a lack of any multiplayer features mar what otherwise could have been an excellent take on this type of game.
