Crisis of Expectation

RPGamer
1 March 2010
  • Excerpt: The tragedy of Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal is one of psychology, shared by all direct sequels. The original Baldur's Gate provided a richly fertile bed of novelty mixed with potential and a healthy pinch of intrigue. Baldur's Gate II expanded upon this potential by several orders of magnitude via an epic plot, sweeping gameplay reforms, and an overall sense of polish.

Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal

Game Vortex
25 April 2004
  • Excerpt: Since Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal is an expansion pack for Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn , you'd expect the two games to look similar. And you'd be right. Shadows of Bhaal still uses the venerable Infinity engine, which means that while the graphics aren't going to be as sharp as you'd like them to be, the environments are still crisp and detailed and the spell effects are ever more impressive. Sure, all of the characters are sprite-based, but is that so bad?

  • Conclusion: The new goodies and abilities are a big part in enhancing the whole experience.  There are a number of great new weapons, armor and such to be had in your journeys, but it's the high-level abilities that'll have you really oooing and ahhing.  Whether it's deathblows or cataclysmic spells these new abilities pack a huge wallop.

Baldur's Gate Series Ends Gloriously

GIN
30 July 2001
  • Excerpt: Four games and several years ago, the Baldur's Gate saga was born in this fine nation. The original game caused a revolution in the way people, especially PC gamers, thought about role-playing games. It was probably the first RPG to sell over a million copies, and it did it in less than three months.

Expert Review

GameSpot
26 June 2001
  • Summary: The Baldur's Gate series of fantasy role-playing games has consistently exceeded the highest expectations of even the most discriminating players. Back in 1998, the original Baldur's Gate almost single-handedly salvaged the role-playing genre from obscurity--its setting in the popular Forgotten Realms universe of Dungeons & Dragons, its combination of deep role-playing and tactical combat elements, and its epic scale all contributed to its remarkable success.
