  • Summary: TimeGate did a great job with Kohan II and it thoroughly deserved its 8.5 rating but you'd never guess that Axis & Allies was using the engine that Kohan II did because it provides such an over simplified and sometimes overly dumb gameplay which isn't particularly enjoyable to play. It is hard to recommend it even though the multiplayer mode is a somewhat (and possibly only) redeeming factor.

Axis & Allies: RTS

The Gamers Temple
28 May 2005
  • Excerpt: Axis & Allies is based on the classic board game that was an abstract take on World War II on a global scale, similar to the even more classic game Risk. What is not so obvious though is that the game is in a way also based on the computer strategy game Kohan II. This is not much of a surprise considering that Axis & Allies’ developers also developed that game.

  • Conclusion: Overall Axis & Allies is an okay looking, okay playing, and okay sounding game. Nothing really stands out or pulls you into the game. I’d say look else where for your RTS thrills unless you’re really into your King Tigers and Panzers.
  • Pros: A different style of resource management.
  • Cons: But it doesn’t really do anything different to distinguish itself from the crowd.

Axis & Allies

Web Wombat

  • Conclusion: A game that won't appeal to the hardcore WWIIers in the audience because it takes liberties (including having an Axis campaign that plays out more like a series of hypotheticals than anything else), won't really appeal to the board-game fiends, again because of liberties taken, and won't really appeal to the rest of us because it just happens to be so average. There's a lot about Axis & Allies that just doesn't work. As such, look elsewhere for outlets for your bucks.

  • Cons: Laue Grafik, Unspannendes Missionsdesign
