Review: Avernum - Escape From The Pit (PC)
30 April 2013
Summary: In a nutshell Avernum Escape from the Pit belongs in the nineties. There was no need for the game to be remade a second time just because the first remake was having issues running under current Windows 7 or the latest Mac OS. There are ways around that via Virtual PC programs. Avernum ‘s redundant npc dialouge and weak story truely bored me. The combat and exploration, though enjoyable, aren’t strong enough to merit me to play for extended periods of time.
Summary: Even if you’ve played the original, Avernum: Escape from the Pit —a remake of a remake—carries itself with such swagger and old-school RPG strength that it’s very much worth playing all over again. The graphical and interface tweaks help bring the venerable series’ origins sufficiently up to speed for modern audiences, but not so much so that it ever loses that comforting retro approach that has helped to keep these games in such high regard.
Excerpt: While I enjoyed this game, it is very much designed for fans of this sort of RPG, and doesn’t try to move too far away from what the previous games were. If you are a fan of old school PC RPGs, don’t hesitate to check this out. It is available directly from the Spiderweb Software website and on Steam for both Mac and PC.
Pros: The same RPG that fans know and love, great aesthetic and update to the series
Cons: Still appears and feels bit dated for new players
Excerpt: Way back in 1995, Spiderweb Software released its first game, a downloadable RPG called Exile: Escape From the Pit . I played the free demo for that game back then and enjoyed it, but never got a chance to play through the full game. Recently, Spiderweb Software released a second remake of that humble game, Avernum: Escape From the Pit , and that seemed like a good a time as any for me to finally play through it.
Excerpt: Ah, 90's PC gaming. A golden age of video game development where the only limits were technical in nature, and new shareware releases by budding developers were the advertising lifeblood of the industry. If you feel nostalgic when you read the term "boss key", then you may just be familiar with Spiderweb Software, creator of the "Exile" series.
