AudioSurf (PC)

4 July 2013
  • Excerpt: Audiosurf is the kind of bizarre genre-defying game you could only expect from an independent developer. And, thanks to the establishment of online game distribution services such as Valve's Steam platform, accessing indie titles like Audiosurf is easier than ever before—provided that you don't mind whipping out your credit card a little more often. In Audiosurf's case, it might be a worthwhile thing to do. Gameplay Audiosurf is a hybrid music/puzzle/driving game.

  • Excerpt: I was caught red-handed! My wife arrived home early from work one night and heard quite the commotion upstairs. She stepped slowly up and peered into the living room, and what she saw horrified her. She caught me sitting in front of the computer, vacant-eyed, my hand moving about in a crazy to-and-fro motion, while funky music boomed from the speakers. I turned and saw her, and my eyes widened. I went ghost white and tried to tell her it's not what it seems.

Trippy arcade game uses player's own music collection.

Common Sense Media
29 January 2009
  • Summary: Parents need to know that Audiosurf is a unique rhythm action arcade game that uses players' own music playlists to create the levels. The game itself contains no objectionable content, but community chat boards -- including the songs shared on them -- are unfiltered and may contain vulgar language. Players are also free to use any music they choose in the game.

  • Excerpt: Audiosurf is a game developed by a small group of people, designed to be a different type of rhythm game. Looking at screenshots of Audiosurf, you may not be able to tell what makes Audiosurf any different from other games of the genre. The graphics look simple, and the gameplay looks simple.

Audiosurf – Review

GameCritics.com
16 July 2008
  • Excerpt: After picking up a favorable critical reception at the International Games Festival, Audiosurf has been the indie flavor of the month on Steam , and rightly so. Ostensibly it is about veering a hovercraft left and right along a race track that undulates to the beat of your chosen song and collecting colored blocks for points, but the grid that those color blocks fall into turns the game into a kind of two-tiered puzzler.

The 8th Circuit

  • Excerpt: Hardcore gamers beware, if Peggle didn’t get you then Audiosurf definitely will. The gameplay concept is as simple as it is hard to describe in words. Imagine guitar hero meets F-Zero meets connect four and you might have a vague idea of what Audiosurf looks like. Basically you pick your “vehicle,” each with a different special power and speed down a track picking up colored blocks. Match at least three of the same color and you score points.

Audiosurf Review

GameSpot
14 April 2008
  • Excerpt: You'd never know it by the millions of copies that Guitar Hero sells on an annual basis, but just a few years ago rhythm and music games such as Frequency, Amplitude, and Vib Ribbon were part of a fledgling genre that garnered plenty of critical attention but failed to sell very well. Audiosurf, which at the time of this review is available only as a downloadable title via Steam for $9.95, is a game that harks back to those days.
  • Pros: Gameplay is simple yet addictive, Provides an all-new way to enjoy your music, Online leaderboards give meaning to your high scores, Costs less than $10
  • Cons: Lacks different game modes, Has some technical issues, Tracks don't always match the songs very well
