Summary: It works. I ordered a XP copy and instead got a 95,98,me,2000. It loaded and works in safe mode. So far I've been lucky on the older games I've ordered. Packed well and arrived earlier than expected. No game instructions so it took awhile to remember (had a copy in 2002-2003)and figure this out. Still fun. No net needed.
Summary: Thats right Arcanum isn't your typical linear game with a rigid do this do that to complete, completley open ended all npc charecters & building cane be interacted with. The main story line allows for an endless pursuite of side stories to exist side by side so that every choice you make affects the entire game world. Charecter development is only limited by your own desires of who your charecter can be.
Summary: This is by far one of THE best RPG games I've ever played. The steampunk mix of technology and magic is wonderful. The guns are bit underpowered, but the game is fun. The dialog is fun. The environments are beautiful, varied and interesting. There are a LOT of interesting people to meet and talk to. There are SO many quests and adventures. The story is surprising and delightful. The choices I make in the game have consequences.
Summary: Arcanum is one of my all time favorite games. It's a third person RPG that features the player as the protagonist in a very complicated plot that has interesting parallels to religion. The game is immediately interesting as it begins in a shroud of mystery that you slowly unravel. Each new location has some interesting sub-quest(s), each containing various sub-plots that you may or may not explore.
Summary: Freedom is the best part of this game, both in character development and in what you can do in the world. For example, there are at least 5 ways to get past a locked door. You can use lock picking skill, a magic spell, pickpocket the key from an NPC, follow an NPC inside once you know their schedule (if applicable), or destroy the door. If an NPC is around and you get caught doing any of these things, there are consequences.
Summary: I've never finished it. It may have a little too much dialogue and shopping for some folks but the many branched story-tree and the infinite combinations of character development are completely unparalleled. Save often. Save often. You will get killed or make the wrong person mad when you least expect it. Save at least every 20 minutes.
Summary: This game has a lot of faults, some of which are quite annoying but from a RPG perspective it is absolutely top notch. Fantastic character creation and development, great replayability, lots of joinable NPCs, some tough decisions to make and lots of charm. The magic/technology dichotomy is handled very well and the narrative is more than respectable. I enjoyed it and if you can forgive its faults you will too.
