Less common are science-fiction tropes and plotlines, from space travel to grim, dystopian futures. But rarest of all are settings that explore the common ground between the two, that take a setting from one and inject a healthy dose of the other.
Excerpt: When Fallout was released in 1997, it was hailed as a landmark RPG. Its post-apocalyptic setting was a welcome change from the relentless parade of D&D-inspired wizards and elves, and the concept of an RPG without magic was downright revolutionary. Add a delightfully flexible character development system and a jaunty out-of-left-field sensibility, and Fallout added up to be a great game. Its sequel was equally beloved by RPG fans.

They don't look very far advanced from the Fallout series, which the developers of Arcanum also worked on. Plus, they were amazingly rich in detail, so not only was there a lot of replayability from the options listed above, you could also play the games several times just to try and see everything there was to see -- and still not succeed.

For example, I was an ogre and was ugly, but strong. Since I was ugly villagers hassled me when I wanted to talk to them. The game starts by you finding yourself in a blimp accident and people are trying to kill you. You have no idea why.
