Anachronox

Game Over Online
6 August 2015
  • Excerpt: Everything about Anachronox seems to speak of epic. Indeed, the development time it went through was epic. The start and, as we all recently learnt, disappearance of ION Storm (at least the part responsible for this game) has been an epic romp as well.

Anachronox – Staff Retroview

RandomNPC
13 August 2010
  • Excerpt: Strip away the sci-fi veneer of futuristic settings and you’ll often find traditional stories buried underneath. Ion Storm’s Anachronox is little different, building its planet-hopping adventure on the back of a washed-up detective story set in a weird, wild future.

Space Opera for the Rest of Us

RPGamer
1 March 2010
  • Excerpt: Space. A big bunch of emptiness, liberally sprinkled with stuff. Someday we're going out there to find that stuff. Some of that stuff might have once belonged somebody else, but that won't stop us from using it. Finders keepers, right?

  • Conclusion: When diplomacy fails, or you're just exploring hostile areas, you'll be whisked into combat, which is real-time: your characters will spend varying amounts of time getting ready for their next action, which could be moving, using an item or a special ability, or just plain attacking an opponent.

Anachronox was purported to be the start of a series, but poor sales and a lack of money meant that Ion Storm had to close its doors.

  • Excerpt: Anachronox does what many game companies hope to do: successfully transfer the interactive wonder of a console-based Role-Playing Game (RPG) to the PC. While most such "ports" fail miserably, Anachronox comes off as an enjoyable role playing experience.
