Legend of Grimrock Review (PC)

Softpedia
20 July 2012
  • Conclusion: Legend of Grimrock manages to be attractive to two categories of gamers. Those who have played Dungeon Master before the ‘90’s came around will be able to relive those days, part of the Golden Age of gaming now, while those who started their first-person role-playing experience with an Elder Scrolls game will be able to experience a game that is closer to the core of the genre than any other modern one.
  • Pros: + Complex gameplay, + Old-school mechanics, + Engaging puzzles
  • Cons: - Control scheme takes time to get accustomed to, - Some difficulty spikes

The Legend of Grimrock

DarkStation
23 May 2012
  • Conclusion: In a way, The Legend of Grimrock is a lot like Dark Souls . The game rewards calculated, meticulous play and any severe injuries or deaths are likely a result of not taking in your surroundings. There are a lot of ways to die in Grimrock and if you’re not paying attention, taking the time to search out better gear and learn to craft potions, you’re going to have a difficult time with it.

Legend of Grimrock

Strategy Informer
10 May 2012
  • Conclusion: Which is a shame, because you’ll probably want to delve deeper into this than just the first few levels, unless the thought of battling giant spiders scares you. If you can get over the relative tedium of the dungeons you’ll be trawling through, there’s a deep indie RPG adventure here. Certainly it’s good enough to recommend to old codgers who remember the likes of Eye of the Beholder or Lands of Lore.

  • Pros: Oppressive setting holds players captive, Excellent puzzles, Challenge that begs to be conquered
  • Cons: Enemy sound effects, Controls are rigid and require acclimation, Some seemingly impossible ambushes

Legend of Grimrock

ActionTrip
19 April 2012
  • Conclusion: The next time you have to tolerate listening to old geezer gamers (stop looking at me), reminisce about the grand adventures they had with games back in the day only to be completely perplexed when you see the game they were talking about and it graphically looks like a 2 year old with an Etch-A-Sketch and a box of crayons did the coding, fire up the modern day version of an old-school dungeon crawler, The Legend of Grimrock and experience one of those old-school gaming...
  • Pros: Old-school dungeon crawling goodness with updated graphics, challenging gameplay, solid puzzles, fantastic price point from an independent developer;
  • Cons: Old-school gaming may not appeal to new-school gamers, linear gameplay can be frustrating if a puzzle proves difficult, once the puzzles have been solved there is limited replay value.

Legend Of Grimrock Review | The Dungeon Master

Dealspwn
27 July 2012
  • Conclusion: The Short Version: Legend Of Grimrock is a difficult game to score, and in many ways, the number is almost meaningless. Almost Human Games have succeeded perfectly in their remit: to create an authentic old-school dungeon crawler that brings the genre back to life without compromising the difficult, frequently infuriating gameplay in any way.
  • Pros: Uncompromising, satisfying and deep gameplay, Sensational puzzles, pleasing difficulty level and lack of handholding, Atmospheric visuals and sound design
  • Cons: Reliance on kiting, AI abuse and exploits can ruin immersion, Clunky, awkward, poorly-explained and infuriating in parts, Over-use of switch-finding puzzles

Legend of Grimrock PC Review

DarkZero
16 May 2012
  • Excerpt: Legend of Grimrock evokes Megaman 9 . It’s the resurrection of 20 year old video game sensibilities, deliberately riffing on old school presentation in order to target a specific audience equipped with a specific nostalgia. Beyond being a faithful recreation of the appeal of games like Eye of The Beholder and Dungeon Master , however, it’s modernised enough to potentially transcend its niche ambitions.
