Age of Empires II HD Edition

Destructoid
2 September 2013
  • Summary: Age of Empires is one of the older strategy game series. Before Supreme Commander , before Sins of a Solar Empire , before even StarCraft, there was Age of Empires . As a fan of planning and scheming, the series has been a staple to my PC gaming diet for some time. You could not believe my excitement when I saw that there would be an HD remake of both Age of Empires II and the Age of Conquerors expansion for Steam. Middle ages, here I come.

Age of Empires

Game Vortex

  • Excerpt: Age of Empires makes use of the isometric semi-3D viewpoint that we all know and love. The graphics are fairly well detailed, even by today's standards, and the game even supports changing resolutions up to 1024x768. The various units and buildings look prerendered, like most games of the sort. One graphical oddity that bothered me was the fact that 'unit carrying meat' looked the same.

Age of Empires 2: HD Edition Review (PC)

Softpedia
1 October 2007
  • Conclusion: Age of Empires II: HD Edition is a mixed experience. On one hand, the visuals haven't received any major improvements, except the fact that they now scale to current resolution displays. On the other hand, the addition of Steam-powered multiplayer and support for the Workshop will certainly give the classic game a new and pretty decent lease on life. There are, however, quite a few glitches and many areas where improvements were certainly needed have been left unchanged.
  • Pros: +The same great Age of Empires 2 experience, +Great Steam-based multiplayer, +Steam Workshop support
  • Cons: -Graphics are still very dated, -Glitches and lag are present, -Lots of areas still needed work

  • Summary: All this construction and destruction takes place on a well-designed set of maps. The terrain in the game is well done and quite varied, with woods, deserts, grasslands, shallows, water, and deep water, as well as actual hills in addition to the standard cliffs. In a departure from most RTS games, the maps you play on are teeming with wildlife, most of which can be killed and used for food. Some of the wildlife (alligators, elephants, etc.

  • Summary: Age of Empires also brings you the expanse of the unknown. You have room to roam -- the maps are large, plenty of room for you, and up to eight other players, to play in a multiplayer forum. In Age of Empires, there are many different multi-tribe scenarios you can choose from. Each with one or more victory conditions. Do you want to take part in a quick race to domination? Or an epic affair involving exploration of the known world and the accumulation of wealth?

Age of Empires II: HD review

Gameplanet
2 April 2013
  • Summary: Age of Empires II: HD will scratch a nostalgic itch for some, but Hidden Path's update doesn't go far enough to bring new audiences to the series.
  • Pros: Retains the character of the original game, with subtle graphical improvements. Multi-monitor, extreme widescreen support. The re-recorded score is excellent.
  • Cons: Owners of the original game should get a free upgrade. Most of the mechanical improvements are minor.

EMU NOVA
23 October 2013
  • Excerpt: Aaaah...
