Excerpt: When I got Age of Empires III I found myself extremly excited. As with most other games, this one was scheduled as another breakthrough in gaming. Age of Empires III would shift RTS borders yet again, but does it? We shall see.
Excerpt: Age of Empires III doesn’t just have a revamped graphics engine. This is the series’ first leap into the third dimension, but instead of simply adding another dimension, Ensemble has pushed the boundaries of what graphics can do in RTS games. First is the inclusion of the Havoc Physics Engine, and to my knowledge, this is the first commercial RTS that has attempted to do physics on this kind of level.
Excerpt: Age of Empires 2. Now that’s a tough act to follow. Not only is the game one of the classics of real-time strategy gaming, it’s still going strong. You can fire up the game today and find opponents online without too much trouble. Now the game that keeps on going has a sequel in the form of Age of Empires III and it’s got some big shoes to fill.
Conclusion: If it hasn't become painfully clear yet, this game is for fans of the genre. It has all the trappings of an RTS game, and does little to bring in non-fans. There are no advanced military formations (there is a setting to enable advanced formations, but they're nothing special), you can't control the rate of fire of the units to fire in volleys only (volley fire only works by accident), and you have no supply lines to protect.
Excerpt: The Age of Empires series has always pushed the boundaries of the real-time strategy genre, starting with the original title. But instead of early man this time around, AoEIII concentrates on the European powers and their struggle for survival and dominance in the new world. It's a great age to set a game. The United States did not yet exist as a country, and all the land in North and South America was open for ownership disputes.
Excerpt: Strategy fans, its time for you to get excited! Microsoft Studios has released the title that drove us nuts when the first game came out. Age of Empires III is upon us and once again I think that this game is going to redefine the way that most of us will play real time strat games.
Conclusion: While the game was definitely not what I had expected it to be, Age of Empires III was quite fulfilling and exciting to play through whether it was campaign or skirmish. As the franchise always has, AOEIII continues the tradition of easy-to-learn, original gameplay, impressive graphics, and that little spark that keeps us playing for hours on end having immersed ourselves within it.
