Excerpt: When I got Age of Empires III I found myself extremly excited. As with most other games, this one was scheduled as another breakthrough in gaming. Age of Empires III would shift RTS borders yet again, but does it? We shall see.
Excerpt: Age of Empires III is the first true follow-up to Age of Empires II, after developers Ensemble Studios had taken a fairly lengthy vacation from the series to work on the Age of Mythology spin-off and its expansion. While AOE III stays true to its roots in some respects and has changed significantly in others, it still represents an RTS done well, and is helped by some stunning presentation and lasting value.
Summary: Parents need to know that this game has some large-scale battles, complete with cannon fire, bodies being thrown in the air, and some blood. However, most of the fighting takes place from a bird's-eye view. Parents should also be aware that the game has an online mode and that Common Sense Media doesn't recommend online play for anyone younger than 12. The game is well-designed, with an absorbing and slightly historical storyline.
Excerpt: Age of Empires III doesn’t just have a revamped graphics engine. This is the series’ first leap into the third dimension, but instead of simply adding another dimension, Ensemble has pushed the boundaries of what graphics can do in RTS games. First is the inclusion of the Havoc Physics Engine, and to my knowledge, this is the first commercial RTS that has attempted to do physics on this kind of level.
Excerpt: Age of Empires 2. Now that’s a tough act to follow. Not only is the game one of the classics of real-time strategy gaming, it’s still going strong. You can fire up the game today and find opponents online without too much trouble. Now the game that keeps on going has a sequel in the form of Age of Empires III and it’s got some big shoes to fill.
