Wunderbar

RPGamer
16 October 2014
  • Excerpt: To help pass the time on the layovers during my summer vacation, I downloaded several games that had caught my interest over the previous months. One of those was Fushigi no Kuni no Bouken Sakaba , or Adventure Bar Story , to use the official English title. While it first came out in 2011 for the PSP, and then a year later on the smartphone platforms (English and Japanese), my version of the game was adapted specifically for the 3DS, and has been available in Japan since...

Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure

DarkStation
15 May 2014
  • Conclusion: Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure won’t be for everyone. Acceptance largely depends on whether a) this is your first Tex Murphy outing, b) you’re a longtime fan or c) you’re an FMV aficionado. New players will likely be put off with how greatly the storytelling assumes they’ve played the previous games.

  • Conclusion: In the end, Tesla Effect doesn’t reinvent the wheel, nor does it aim to. What it does attempt – and successfully accomplishes – is to mark the comeback of a beloved adventure gaming icon, and to do so in a way familiar to legions of fans. Finally tying up story ends left loose for years, Tesla Effect offers up a full-length Tex Murphy adventure, comfortably taking between 12-15 hours to complete (leaning towards the lengthier end of the spectrum if one takes the time to...

Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure

IGN
7 May 2014
  • Conclusion: Just as its noir-inspired detective Tex Murphy is a “man out of time,” Tesla Effect is indeed a game out of time. Every aspect -- from the humor to the puzzles to the live action cutscenes -- feels beamed here straight from the ‘90s. Sometimes it’s charming, and others, it’s just dated. But if nothing else, Tex’s puns and underdog relatability ultimately still make this rocky, uneven case worth cracking.
  • Pros: Campy dad humor, Classic adventure gaming, Likeable protagonist
  • Cons: Dated feel, Flawed dialogue system
