Conclusion: A Story About My Uncle unfortunately tells no story and is simply content to regale you with the incentive to play Spider-Man with rocket boots. It pulls it off pretty well and offers some genuinely interesting moments of gameplay but also a lot of frustrating ones, where you fail to land on your target by what seems like very, very little, time and time again.
Excerpt: I'm a child at heart, really. The world we live in holds endless wonder to discover, which I try to do every day. I love bickering with my younger brother as if we were 10 and 8 years old again, and I fondly look back on my Lego days. Even though it's also with pain in my heart, realizing I'm looking back at a chapter which I will never get to experience a second time.
Pros: Original setting and story, Melancholic atmosphere, Fun gameplay
Conclusion: Unfortunately, the last quarter of A Story About My Uncle does become a little too repetitive, and slightly overly obscure grapple set pieces require blind luck more often than skill. That said, this is still a great adventure - one which will return you to childhood fantasy, and one which will far from get your goat.
Conclusion: Concept: Explore a fantasy world with the help of leaping suit and grappling hook
Graphics: Impressive landscapes and art direction, even inside of stifling caves
Sound: None of the music stands out as being particularly memorable, but the cues and swells accentuate the exploration nicely
Playability: Accuracy is required for many of the leaping puzzles and it works well.
Excerpt: A Story About My Uncle is a first person adventure from Gone North Games which has elements of exploration, platforming and a heavy narrative focus. Unlike a large amount of first-person-adventure games in recent years, A Story About My Uncle is not a straight forward walking-simulator that crams the story down your throat without giving you any room to breathe, in fact it’s quite the opposite.
Pros: + Movement system is incredibly fun and well-polished.
Conclusion: It's worth keeping in mind that this is a debut title made by a development team of nine people. It's a solid effort and a strong start, and that's definitely worth celebrating. It just probably isn't worth your money.
