Nice size but cheap fan

Paul R., Newegg

  • Summary: Can't beat the size and weight for people who want to keep their laps from being "toasted" by a warm netbook but don't want to carry around an oversized hunk of aluminum.
  • Pros: This fits my 12" netbook almost perfectly so the size is fabulous for people that have small laptops. The big aluminum plate gets nice and cool with the fan blowing air through it. I've got the larger Zalman cooler (the 1000) and this performs pretty similarly (though with a single fan rather tha...
  • Cons: The fan is pretty cheap and doesn't have any speed control. I find that the fan also occasionally "rattles" as it spins. Not sure what causes that even after taking the cooler apart (which is pretty easy).

Portable airflow keeps it cool

Razvan N., Newegg

  • Summary: Also noticed my optical drive area is a lot cooler while it's running. The fan is quiet. Unnoticeable to me over common background noise. Fan speed is NOT adjustable on this model. I would have traded a noisier fan for more air flow :) As others have mentioned, keep cooler on level surface.
  • Pros: Bought this portable mini cooler for my Dell XPS M1210 three months ago. In conjunction with a fan controller software (I8kfanGUI), I have managed to lower my average idle CPU temps by 6-8C. Great while doing office work or internet browsing. Don't expect to see a huge difference in load temperat...
  • Cons: The USB power input connector at the back is now very loose and shorts out. Will RMA it back to Zalman for replacement.

  • Summary: Also, DON'T use this flat on your bare lap! I made a little square base out of Masonite to set this on and now don't worry about my trousers blocking the fan intake.
  • Pros: Unbelievable! I don't have any device to measure exact temperature of various areas of my Toshiba netbook but I know where the hot spots are and the Toshiba certainly had them - before I used this little gadget. The bottom used to get VERY hot where the memory card access door was and fairly warm...
  • Cons: Maybe a little noticeable noise from the fan but not objectionable or distracting. Fans just have to make a little noise to work, right? Also, one of the bottom front feet kept falling off and I think that it was never properly attached at the factory. Finally dabbed a little contact cement on it...
