Insane installation

Anonymous, Newegg
23 July 2011
  • Summary: I was leery buying this after reading the complaints on the difficulty of installing this cooler on both Newegg and on review sites. I decided to buy the Scythe universal mount since one of the Newegg reviews mentioned this made the install easier.
  • Pros: Low-profile cooler made for HTPC cases. Quiet cooling.
  • Cons: Insane installation. Especially for HTPCs which is the only reason to get this type of cooler.

Words, but bad installation

Anonymous, Newegg

  • Summary: I used this in an ESXi whitebox/testlab I put together. It is currently up and functioning. Seems to be cooling the i5 2400S without too much trouble, which is great. However, the ends of my fingers are a tattered mess trying to install this on the board.
  • Pros: Low form factor, very quiet.
  • Cons: Poor mounting kit makes low form factor a detriment.

User Review

  • Summary: I would not recommend buying this Scythe Big Shuriken
  • Pros: The Scythe Big Shuriken has a low profile and fit in my Dell case. It was easy to install.
  • Cons: It has a 120mm x 120mm x 12mm fan with 4 pin connector. It runs really slow (about 800rpm) at this speed it has about 16cfm airflow. This is not enough airflow to cool the cpu. Most 120mm fans are 25mm thick. The only way you are going to get good airflow is to buy a good CoolMaster 120mm fan.

Mixed feeling on it

  • Summary: Don't buy unless you can lap the bottom of the heatsink for flatness. At least plan to check it out before installing on an AM3, which is a huge chip to cover, so flatness is VERy important.
  • Pros: Very low profile given cooling performance. First class appearance, nice looking construction. Fan is super quite, especially with a mobo that can slow it down to match the CPU load. Multi blade fan is pretty impressive looking too while running.
  • Cons: The base on mine was NOT FLAT AT ALL, which is the single most important feature on any heatsink. It must be flat on the bottom or it just plain doesn't work because it doesn't fully contact the CPU surface to transfer heat. I had to hand lap the base in for literally 45+ minutes before I was eve...
