Conclusion: Computers are insanely powerful and incredibly affordable nowadays. However, it's not without its consequences -- ten years ago, components run cool enough that a simple heatsink plus a few low RPM fans, if necessary, will suffice. Nowadays, many components will need additional cooling if you want some overclocking headroom or just to bring it to an acceptable operating temperature.
Excerpt: If you've ever been in the market for a new computer enclosure, power supply, or cooling solution the name Antec is probably familiar to you. Based in Fremont, CA, Antec has been around for some time and has built up quite a product portfolio including is variety of cooling solutions. Today we look at one of their most unique coolers, the SpotCool.
Summary: Internal cooling problems are difficult to solve in desktop computer systems. Server and workstations frequently have extra internal fans and are specially designed for optimal airflow through the chassis, but desktop systems don't usually have anything more than a front- or rear-mounted fan to move air.
Conclusion: I wish I could say that the Spot Cool solved some kind of problem for me, but I don't have any problems with heat in any of my test machines (Core 2 Duo, Athlon 64 X2, dual Opteron), and I don't overclock. If you do have such problems and can't use or are already using an on-chip heatsink and fan for your chipsets and video processor, or if you have heatsinks on your RAM that you need to help cool down, the Spot Cool can be a great asset.
Conclusion: The spot cool is a product that is long overdue. Long have we been looking for a practical way to get a fan over our RAM slots without resorting to duct tape or hot glue. Antec replaces all of that duct tape and hot glue with one simple little screw. The design and idea are both simple ones, but sometimes the best ideas are the simple ones. Antec has really come up with an innovative idea. The Spot Cool is really going to help those that need more cooling but can't...
Conclusion: At just below £10, the Spot Cool is an expensive cooling option. But when you think that it can cool anywhere, it looks pretty good and it’s more or less silent, it’s a sound buy. However, it does make your PC look a little unprofessional in that a fan on a stalk isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing addition to your case. Looks or temperatures, the choice is yours.
