Summary: ++ I set it for 80MB UltraBuffer and torrented the Ubuntu 8.x DVD iso and the Knoppix DVD iso at the same time, about 40 threads at 1.3MByte/sec (i love my ISP) on an external USB2 hard drive and burnt a DVD at the same time, no problem.
Pros: Burns CDs, DVD+/-RW and DVD Dual Layer Even though the hardware buffer is only 2MB, it comes with UltraBuffer and Nero Express Essentials which allows Direct Memory Access of the drive so you can use a much larger buffer.
Cons: None, except that I guess we are paying $60 for the 'privledge' of it being External vs identical internal SATA drive.
Summary: I'll probably be trying to sell it soon, since I'm upgrading to a real computer from this awful Mac mini. NEVER BUY MAC UNLESS IT'S A MACBOOK. Seriously, Mac desktops are garbage. I've worked with Mac Minis, iMacs, and Mac Pros. For desktops, just get a PC.
Pros: It burns CDs, DVDs, and Dual-Layers, though, I haven't done dual-layers yet. Much faster speeds for CD burning than my Mac Mini (garbage, overpriced computer). Also burns DVDs, which my Mac Mini can't do.
Cons: It's bigger than my mac mini and my external HDD. Requires extra power source besides USB (though, because of this, I doubt it draws any power from the USB port, which is nice). Far from portable, due to its size, weight, and need to be plugged in, but so are CDs/DVDs nowadays compared to flash d...
Excerpt: MMMMmmmm….That sums up pretty much everything there is to know about this external DVD/CD drive. It is about the size of a hard cover book and it stands up vertically or horizontally. It’s silver but best of all. It’s pretty quiet. Surprising because most external drives ar rather loud. …
Summary: The front of the thing is a mirror, and it can get a bit distracting to see your own movement if it's reflected to you.
Pros: Worked perfectly, have had no coasters yet. Writes quickly, looks good. Little green LED behind the one-way-mirror front. I have mine standing up and I've had no problems with it over the last month or two.
Cons: Am unable to open the drive itself to drag/drop items to burn. I've got to use a program to do it - dunno if that's on my end or something, though, but it's not really a problem.
Summary: Works well both flat and upright: drawer has retainer points to keep DVD in place when open. As a standard USB device, the only drivers necessary are provided by the operating system. If you have problems with "drivers", that's not the fault of the drive.
Pros: This very attractively packed external drive has operated flawlessly, much better than I expected from a USB drive. The aluminum case and its stand have a great industrial look and it appears tough as nails. I haven't used the included software but have used Roxio, Fireburner, DVD Clone, and CD A...
Cons: Being as Sony, it will be a pain to have it repaired, so I cross my fingers it will continue to work flawlessly.
Summary: I have not had good experiences with Sony products (or the company) in the past, but this piece of equipment always makes me think twice before completely disregarding all Sony products.
Pros: I have had this drive for nearly 4 years without any problems. It has been through quite a bit with me - extensive travel, extreme environments (regularly exposed to sub-zero as well as 110+ temps), has stood up to careless drops, thuds, and bangs, and just keeps on going. I have never had a prob...
Cons: The only thing that I don't like about this drive is the fact that it is quite large, but not nearly as big as some of the other options out there.
Cons: Software is a disaster, huge, bloated, convoluted. Keeps losing the driver so even if you figure out how to use the software it's difficult to ever burn a disc because you'll have to uninstall and reinstall the software to get the driver back. I would never buy another Sony computer product again...
Summary: Got this for Xmas and love it! Most external drives look better lying flat due to the lettering on the front. Not this drive. Looks best standing on end. May be the best external drive out there IMO!
Pros: Looks great on my desktop. Relatively quiet operation, solid burns, quality construction.
Cons: Mirrored front sometimes picks up fingerprints. Not a real problem though.
Summary: I bought this to avoid some wear and tear on the internal superdrive on my MacBook. It works fine for ripping any DVDs and burning single-layer discs, but won't burn dual-layer discs, which most DVD movies are these days. Luckily my superdrive works great for that, if not a bit slower.
Pros: Looks great on the desktop and it's relatively quiet. When it works, it works pretty quickly. Faster than my internal superdrive.
Cons: Won't burn DVD+R DL discs for me at all. Goes through the process and seems to complete but it never works no matter what I try. Different programs, different speeds...nada.
