"Great External DVD Burner"

CNET
12 January 2005
  • Pros: So far, so good. Came with Nero, an excellent software package, and setup was seamless. Uses a Firewire connection, so it won't take up a USB slot (but it will accept a USB 2.0, if that's what you've got). I've also been thrilled with the fast CD burnin
  • Cons: Short power cord. A little bulky and heavy for a true road warrior. Price still stung a bit.

"Poor burn at the beginning all media."

CNET
12 January 2005
  • Pros: Looks cools. USB makes it easy to port around.
  • Cons: Poor (weak) burn at the beginning of all discs. This includes Sony brand and other Sony recommended brands. Expensive for what is really a portable DVD-ROM drive. Ships with NERO. Please Sony, wise up. Nero deliberately seeks to sabotage other recorder so

"iLink is not 1394 or Firewire"

CNET
2 December 2004
  • Cons: expensive. only runs on USB. Mini iLink connection is loose and unreliable. Large iLink connection quit working after a few uses. Sony doesn't know what 1394 is.

"Inconsistent Burning"

CNET
16 November 2004
  • Pros: The capacity for burning DVD+R DL disks is great.
  • Cons: I've had difficulty getting disks to burn consistantly, even when using the brands recommended by Sony for this drive. I installed the Nero 6.6 update when it became available and was no longer able to burn disks that could be read by my stand-alone DVD

"Beautifull design, easy to use"

CNET
30 October 2004
  • Pros: Really stable dvd-writer, fairly high speed, and real easy to use and install! But make sure you have USB 2! I'm really glad i bought this writer!
  • Cons: It does not recognise the speed compatibility of some really cheezy dvd+r brands. But even then it burns at 2.4 speed

"A Great DVD Burner"

CNET
5 October 2004
  • Pros: Works great, fast, love the included Nero software. DVDs work in all my DVD players. Love the ability to use double layer media. Perfect for notebook users who didn't want to pay for a $500 upgrade to get a slower, less-compatible DVD burner built in to t
  • Cons: Price. $185 isn't bad from NewEgg but I'd prefer something around $150. Blank DVD media's expensive, but should come down in price. It's hit-or-miss trying to determine which kind of media (DVD+/-R, etc.) will burn the best and be compatible with your reg

"Super Sleek, Sexy, Simple, Sony"

CNET
28 September 2004
  • Pros: Quick simple set-up,connect and install. Burns very quick at 8x. Up and running in < 15 minutes! It actually took less time than reading the very well written manual/quick start guide. I repair computers for a living and this is the drive I've been
  • Cons: I haven't found any problems with the unit what so ever. I down rated the features because some other units offer features such as card readers, etc. and no headphone jack out put either. Dual layer media is too slow, and expensive (but not a fault with

"I like Sony products"

CNET
14 September 2004
  • Pros: easy to install
  • Cons: product support from Nero hard to get. my first three attempts to burn a 2hour and 30 minute file ended in failure to burn. I would like more software options like Studio 9 with a patch to recocnize DVD-9.
