"I call it the 50/50 machine... this is your chance of getting it to burn successfully."

CNET
2 February 2005
  • Pros: The whirring of a burning CD is a nice backdrop to lull you into sleep as you wait for this machine to eventually return an error.
  • Cons: None. It barely does its only function.

"dead in less than 90 days"

CNET
12 January 2005
  • Pros: excellent drive when it worked, did everything I asked of it.
  • Cons: Like many other Sony products I have owned and/or read about as of late, quality is lacking. The drive failed on lead out on an important backup, coastered the disk (a cd-r), now will not recognize anything I put in. Sony support is horrible - 2 days no

"Nice Features till it starts burning coasters."

CNET
1 September 2004
  • Pros: My drive came with Nero software. The software had almost every feature one could imageine so thats a pro for Nero really and not Sony.
  • Cons: 7 secusfull Sony brand DVD+Rs later it makes 3 coasters and the drivecheck program provided on sony's website just says failure. I guess I'll call sony tomarrow like I'm suppose to but I hold out little hope based off of other peoples reviews of thier tec

"Works great with updates"

CNET
28 June 2004
  • Pros: With firmware updates high speed reliable burning is easy. I have not had a problem with the drive yet.
  • Cons: annoying you have to get firmware and software updates yourself. Mine came with firmware that wouldn't support 8x burning, although the box advertised 8x burning.

"runs smooth with updated firmware"

CNET
23 June 2004
  • Pros: I purchased this drive recently and have not had a problem. I updated the firmware and the software prior to using the drive, so maybe those updates solved the issues others have had. So far I have burned 10+ dvds without a coaster. I don't have anothe
  • Cons: A little expensive, but seems to be on sale a lot lately and there is a $30 rebate. Need to update the firmware to acheive the 8x burning speed, even thought the box said 8x. Seems like the drive should have come with the updated firmware already instal

"You need to be somewhat computer literate"

CNET
30 March 2004
  • Pros: Solid and smooth unit. Easy installation. Burns at 8X on 4x media after firmware upgrade. Can be found on the net for $140 or so- wish I paid that price.
  • Cons: Sony tech support is totally useless. I called them 3 times (average wait time: 3 hrs.) and they told me the drive HAD to be the master, and DMA HAD to be enabled on both counts. The FAQs on their website is fairly useless- tech support claims (to me anyw

"Won't fit in a Sony Vaio case"

CNET
30 March 2004
  • Pros: Never had a chance to use the writer.
  • Cons: I tried to install the writer in my Sony Vaio RZ10. The front plate of the computer would not let the writers door open. I called Sony and was told that the DRU 530A didn't fit most of Sony's computers. No warnings on the box about this problem. I had
