The Sony BDU-X10S is compatible with a number of disc types including BD-ROM, BDAV, BDMV, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-ROM, DVD Video, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL. Among the CD formats it supports are CD-DA (audio) CD-ROM XA, CD Extra, Video CD, Photo CD, and CD Text. It reads BD-ROMs at a speed of 2x, CDs at 24x, and DVDs at 8x.

The Sony BDU-X10S offers an average access time of 210 milliseconds for BD-ROMs, 170 milliseconds for DVD-ROMs, and 160 milliseconds of CD-ROMs. It has a burst transfer rate of 150 megabytes per second. It also has a sustained transfer rate of 9 megabytes per second (2x) for BD-ROMs and 10.5 megabytes per second (8x) for DVD-ROMs. The BDU-X10S has a buffer data memory of 4 megabytes.

The BDU-X10S ships with a Cyberlink Power DVD BD Edition Player software CD for playing High Definition video on Blu-ray Discs.
